The Design Engineer plays a pivotal role in planning organizing and directing design activities for the School Upgrade Program and critical repair projects. Acting as the lead design professional this individual ensures quality reviews implements policies and procedures and coordinates with the Division of the State Architect (DSA) to meet regulatory and project requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the design process for K-12 school modernization and repair projects ensuring compliance with functional budgetary environmental and legal standards.
Manage multiple projects collaborating with architects consultants and district personnel from conceptualization to execution.
Oversee building design to ensure adherence to LAUSD standards educational needs and construction guidelines.
Identify and select architectural firms best suited for each project based on qualifications and performance standards.
Provide clear and consistent guidance to architects regarding objectives standards schedules and budgets.
Establish and maintain an efficient design review process ensuring maximum value and alignment with community district and environmental needs.
Ensure timely decision-making and thorough documentation that complies with legal and project standards.
Review and approve design modifications ensuring project stays within budget constraints.
Coordinate with stakeholders on community outreach initiatives to foster engagement and support for district projects.
Manage collaboration between departments such as Environmental Health & Safety A/E Design Services Maintenance & Operations and external consultants.
Facilitate ongoing education including seminars and workshops to enhance industry knowledge and collaboration.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
10 years of full-time professional experience in facilities design capital project coordination contract administration cost estimation and scheduling.
5 years of experience specifically in the design planning and construction of educational facilities or similar public agency projects.
Education:
Bachelors degree in Architecture or Engineering from a recognized college or university.
Preferred Licenses & Certifications:
Certificate of Registration as an Architect by the California State Architectural Board OR
Professional Engineer certification by the State Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
