As one part of this comprehensive program all staff as well as their dependents have access to free and confidential supports through our Employee and Family Assistance Provider (EFAP) in addition to many other program components.

Reporting to the Specialized Services System Principal / Managers the Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) will work under the supervision of a registered Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to implement specific communication goals with HWDSB students. The CDA under the direction of the SLP will work in a multi-disciplinary setting (speech-language pathologist teachers educational assistants behaviour analyst child and youth care practitioner) with individual students or in a group model. The CDA will aid in generalizing the students goals to the classroom and educators.

The CDA will work on an itinerant basis to support students in a variety of schools who present with various communication needs (nonverbal to articulation concerns). These significant needs may be associated with a variety of neurodevelopmental disabilities including Autism Intellectual Disability Cerebral Palsy Down Syndrome and other genetic syndromes or students may not have a specific diagnosis.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • A post-graduate Communicative Disorders Assistant diploma is required.

Experience:

  • With augmentative alternative communication devices
  • High and low tech ( creating visuals eye gaze board)

Skills Required:

  • Knowledge and experience supporting students with communication difficulties including oral motor/speech sound and expressive language therapy;
  • Experience and ability to work both independently and within a collaborative team setting;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with communication technology programs to support student learning

Duties and Responsibities:

  • Implement individual communication program expectations in a variety of settings (class individual and group) under the direction of the speech-language pathologist;
  • Prepare and maintain materials to support communication programs for schools classrooms or individual students;
  • Model communication strategies materials programs devices to staff;
  • Support student achievement through assistive technology and/or specialized equipment;
  • Facilitate communication technology training for school staff;
  • Maintain records of therapy sessions and up-to-date daily plans records and observations;
  • Collaborate and liaise with system and classroom teachers and other support staff to promote student success
