About Us:The Mustard Seed is a humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community grow hope and support change. The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty throughout Alberta and works to create positive lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services food clothing and shelter and is now increasing our support services health & wellness centers education and employment coaching as well as permanent supportive housing to those living in poverty within Alberta British Columbia and Saskatchewan.
Work Schedule Options: Casual (as needed basis) position
Reporting To:Shelter Manager
Location:Medicine Hat AB (Primary site is at 503A Allowance Ave SE and potential secondary at the 737 8 Street)
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as the first point of contact for participants delivering exceptional service that promotes dignity equity and kindness for all.
- Respond promptly and effectively to individuals in crisis both inside and outside the shelter. Address a range of needs including physical and mental health concerns anger management aggression and interpersonal conflicts. Employ de-escalation techniques minimize harm and guide individuals toward healthier alternatives.
- Utilize case management tools to support participants in setting and achieving short- and long-term housing goals.
- Enforce shelter rules expectations and suspensions as necessary while maintaining professionalism and respect.
- Practice conflict resolution and facilitate reconciliatory conversations.
- Support participants in meeting their basic needs including access to food shelter and hygiene.
- Assist with daily meal programs.
- Assist with various janitorial and maintenance tasks as needed to uphold the cleanliness and functionality of the shelter.
- Oversee daily shelter operations including laundry services cleaning common areas conducting security checks and supervising shelter activities.
- Model healthy and respectful relationships with community participants and volunteers through active listening appropriate referrals and openness to spiritual conversations.
- Be a supportive and proactive member of the team including volunteers and other visitors.
- Participate in staff training attend staff meetings and have one-on-one sessions with supervisor.
- Collect data and maintain accurate client records in CCMS and HMIS using FDARP.
- Complete and submit incident reports when necessary.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with participants ensuring relationships remain supportive and ethical.
- Provide a safe and clean environment for respite meeting the needs of adult participants.
- Take initiative and apply critical thinking to assess situations make informed decisions and effectively support participants.
- Use a person-centered approach to encourage participants to access resources and services that align with their goals.
- Adhere to privacy and confidentiality standards as outlined by FOIP and the Health Information Act.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working with marginalized populations preferably within inner-city or underserved communities.
- Familiarity with the unique challenges and culture of inner-city environments and a commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals.
- Demonstrated passion for contributing to the mission of ending homelessness in Alberta.
- Proven ability to follow organizational protocols and ensure tasks are completed with precision and professionalism.
- Experience in case management and advocacy is an asset
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a dynamic environment.
- Experience working in volunteer-based organizations is considered an asset.
- Exceptional communication skills both written and verbal with proficiency in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
- A proactive self-starter with the ability to collaborate effectively within a cross-functional team.
- Strong desire to work with a marginalized and vulnerable populations.
- Desire to serve within a Christian ministry supporting The Mustard Seeds faith-based mission and values.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position involves working in a challenging and potentially volatile environment where you may encounter racial slurs name-calling and derogatory comments from community members. It requires resilience conflict resolution skills and the ability to maintain professionalism and composure in the face of adversity. Training and support will be provided to ensure your safety and well-being.
- Moderate amounts of walking climbing standing sitting lifting and carrying may be required.
- The position often involves a fast-paced environment and requires mental effort to analyze information and problem-solve.
- Varied mental and emotional effort including responding appropriately to intense situations and providing conflict resolution as necessary.
- This position requires the training in usage of a two-way radio communications MS Office based computer programming HMIS database system FDARP FOIP First Aid NVCI and Safe Talk.
- This position may be required to work out of other TMS locations based on the needs and direction of TMS.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- The Mustard Seed offers Casual employees access to a $200 health spending account.
- An overnight premium is provided for all overnight shifts to recognize and compensate for the unique demands of working during these hours.
