Job Description

The Hato Hone St John Priory invites applications for the position of Priory Dean.

The Order of St John in Aotearoa New Zealand is seeking a spiritually grounded and visionary leader to serve as its next Priory Dean the senior ecclesiastical officer within the Priory. This is a voluntary position for a term of three years with the right of renewal for another three years and can be based from anywhere in NZ.

As Priory Dean you will act as a spiritual anchor and pastoral leader within the Order and provide ecclesiastical and spiritual advice to the Prior Chancellor Chief Executive and Priory Chapter. The role exists to uphold and safeguard the Christian ethos and foundation of the Order supporting the delivery of ceremonial and liturgical events and working alongside colleagues to nurture the spiritual wellbeing of staff volunteers and communities across the country.

Key responsibilities of this role include

  • Provide visible and active leadership across the Hato Hone St John Chaplaincy programme ensuring the continued development of a spiritually rich pastorally responsive and culturally respectful service.
  • Uphold and promote the Christian character and spiritual ethos of the Order supporting the alignment of ceremonial and spiritual practices with the Orders founding motto and principles.
  • Oversee and approve forms of worship prayer and spiritual expression used across the Priory while ensuring coherence with the broader international Order.
  • Participate in ceremonial duties including leading or supporting Investiture Services Youth Services blessings memorials and Chapter prayers.
  • Collaborate with Mori chaplaincy leadership and uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi through inclusive and bicultural expressions of spirituality including leading national karakia alongside Mori chaplains.
  • Represent the Priory on matters of ecclesiastical and spiritual significance both nationally and where required internationally.
  • Nurture and guide chaplains across the country ensuring strong leadership appropriate pastoral formation and ongoing development.

To be eligible for this position requirements include

  • Be a member of the Order St John with a leadership track record and a knowledge / understanding of the Order.
  • Accredited senior priest or ordained minister of an established church in New Zealand (recognised by the Order); highly respected in the community.
  • Highly selfaware with a mature faith and ability to practically apply it within a workplace setting where there are a diversity of religious denominations/faiths or no faith.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels.
  • Affirming and encouraging approachable and flexible nature and workstyle.
  • An understanding and sensitivity to Tikanga Mori as well as the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application as well as the work of Chaplains.

This role is voluntary and would require you to attend Chapter meetings and where possible Order Matters meetings and report to Chapter formally as appropriate. The successful candidate may be located anywhere in New Zealand and Hato Hone St John will ensure that appropriate travel and accommodation arrangements are made plus reimburse any necessary expenses.
