Job Description

Reports to: Executive Director for the Arts

Content Specialty: Visual & Media Arts Content Specialist PreK12

General Description:

The Boston Public Schools seeks an innovative and collaborative leader who will guide the districts visual and media arts educators. Under the supervision of the Executive Director for the Arts the Visual and Media Arts Content Specialist will coordinate the development delivery implementation and monitoring of visual and media arts curriculum initiatives events and projects across the district. The position will collaborate with external and internal stakeholders to organize and promote a sequential culturally & linguistically responsive visual and media arts curriculum PreK12.

The Department of Academics and Professional learning determines priorities regarding core curriculum instruction assessment and professional development aligned to content standards. This position will improve teacher practice through the implementation of core curriculum instructional strategies aligned assessment and professional development within network schools. The content specialist will develop a deep understanding of instructional practice academic performance academic content and professional development needs working toward quality implementation of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks/National Core Arts Standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports teachers in the implementation of effective instructional practices to improve student outcomes
  • Guide implementation and differentiation of core curriculum
  • Model leadership utilizing effective communication skills that reflects a deep commitment to the educational success and opportunity for all students problem solving skills and protocols and leading with inspiring transformation
  • Develop and provide professional development for teams to support the improvement of core instruction and implementation of National/Massachusetts/Boston Core Visual and Media Arts Frameworks
  • Meet with teams of teachers to provide professional development and critical feedback
  • Support development of demonstration classrooms within the network that incorporate best practices
  • Support inventory and distribution of materials
  • Provide professional development outside of the school day and in the summer
  • Organize citywide showcases of student artwork
  • Assist colleagues in citywide Visual and Performing Arts events

Skills and competencies:

  • Ability to critically organize time to maximize contact with multiple groups of teachers and/or schools
  • Demonstrated ability to provide critical feedback
  • Demonstrated ability to create and disseminate instructional tools for teachers and build
  • professional development modules for different audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to use data to guide instruction decisions for both teachers and students
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically to create school change while considering the needs of all stakeholders
  • Ability to consider multiple perspectives synthesize information and draw conclusions to support students improvement
  • Demonstrated ability to work with adults and adult learners
  • Demonstrated ability to be selfdirected and solutionsoriented
  • Extensive knowledge of media arts software and curriculum
  • Extensive knowledge of Understanding by Design and Universal Design for Learning
  • Extensive knowledge of instructional techniques to support urban students in gaining proficiency in content area
  • Extensive knowledge of state standards and recent research regarding content instruction and development
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally in speaking and writing
  • Attend professional development to deepen knowledge of content pedagogy and other related competencies

Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelors Degree
  • MA Teacher Certification in Visual Arts or related field
  • 5 or more years of relevant urban teaching experience
  • Experience teaching students with disabilities and English Language Learners
  • Proficiencies with technology including Google Drive: Docs Spreadsheets Slides; Microsoft Office: Word Excel PowerPoint; Media Editing Software including Adobe
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines achieving goals successfully
  • Ability to analyze complex data and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to present information to large and small groups
  • Demonstrated experience as a teacher leader
  • Demonstrated experience providing engaging data and standardsbased professional development
  • Current authorization to work in the United States Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

Terms: BTU Group I

NOTE: Schoolbased managerial employees will work 223 days between July 1st and June 30th each year. The 223 day workyear will include the 180 days in which school is in session and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school.

Schoolbased managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather schoolbased managerial employees need not report to work.
