Summary

King County District Court Profile

KCDC is the largest and mosttechnologically advanced Courtof Limited Jurisdiction in the State of Washington. It currently processes approximately200000 matters per yearwith25 elected judgesandroughly 260employees at 8 courthouse locations. The Court is a leader in many areas involvingpublic safetyandaccess to justice including the use of problemsolving courts jailalternative programs technology and judgemanaged probation services.Fourteen cities contractwith King County forcourt servicesprovided by KCDC.


Position Summary

TheProbation Mental Health Specialistprovides varied probation services to participants sentenced inRegional Mental Health CourtandRegional Veterans Court. Representative responsibilities includeinterviewingevaluation and report writing making recommendations asto placement and treatmentprograms reviewing and analyzing individual participant needs and assessing how communitybased programs can accommodate those needs. Work also involves meeting with participantsregardingprogress counseling writing court correspondence makingcourtappearancesand interacting with treatment agencies.

TheProbation Mental Health Specialistis expected to become acquainted withCounty State and District Court policiesprocedures and regulations; to adhere toGeneral Administrative Order 2406 JudgeSupervised Probation: King County District Court Monitoring Standards to apply basicdiagnostic and counseling principles; to efficiently utilizecommunity resources; utilize available resources in determining the best alternative for a given situation or case. The Probation Mental Health Specialist is supervisedby andreports directly to a King County District Court Probation ServicesManager.

Job Duties

  • Collaborates withRegional Mental Health Court(RMHC) andRegional Veterans Court(RVC) team memberstreatment providers and stakeholders in the management of probation cases assigned through the court.

  • Monitorsall cases assigned follows up with participants to overseecompliancewith conditions of supervision and the court adoptedtreatment planas directed by the General Administrative Order (GAO).

  • Meets with and conductsindepth interviewswith RMHC and RVC participantsin order togatheraccurateinformationregardingbackground and present situation(s).

  • Identifyand respond toemergent participant needs.

  • Seek approval for anymodificationsto thesupervision planasand provide participants withappropriateprogramreferralsas needed.

  • Submitsstatuscompliance finaldispositionand violation reports on participants in alignment with scheduled review and administrative hearings withappropriaterecommendations.

  • Consults with King County District CourtProbation Managementon difficult orcomplex cases.

  • Maintains anelectronic logof contacts and informationrelativeto an individual casein order tomonitoractivity and progress.

  • Appearsin court.

  • Attends meetings andconferences;participatesinstaff developmentactivities to increase competence;researchesprogram and housingavailability as needed.

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

  • Masters degree with a concentration in thesocial/behavioral sciences.

  • A minimum ofthreeyears experienceincase managementor direct services to persons with severe and persistent mental illness;additionaldiagnostic experiencemay substitute for up to two years of case management experience.

  • At leastone year of interviewingand social/psychological diagnostic experience preferably in the criminal justice system.

  • Knowledge of the full range ofmental healthcommunity agencies support servicestreatment programshousingand resources available to RMHC/RVC participants.

  • Ability to recognize symptoms of severe and persistentmental illnessorsubstanceuse disorderand make relevant evaluationsand appropriate recommendations based on information obtained.

  • Abilityto obtain organizeanalyzeandpresent informationin and out of acourtroom setting.

  • Ability to effectively work with adiverse populationfrom a variety ofcultures ethnicities lifestyles and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Ability to work understressful conditionsand reactefficientlyand effectively.

  • Willingness to serve as anagent of the courtto include monitoring court requirements and toreporttimelyall violations per the GAO.

  • Ability to have acompassionateandsympathetic approachtoward participants.

  • Demonstratebasic interviewing skills.

  • Knowledge oftraumainformed careprinciples.

  • Must be able to work cooperativelycourteouslyand effectively with othercoworkers supervisors judgescourt personnel police officers attorneys prosecutors mental health advocacy groups victim advocates members from the public and with private agencies.

  • The selected applicant must successfully complete theBasic Services AcademyMisdemeanant ProbationCounselor Academy (MPCA)within six months of employment or as soon as offered as required by WAC.

Supplemental Information

  • Selection process: Applicationmaterials will be screened for qualifications; the most competitive candidates will be invited for one or more panelinterviews. Any employment offer will be contingent upon the results ofa criminalbackground investigation andfinger printing.

  • Work schedule:Regular working a 40hour workweek. Responsibilities occasionally may requireadditionalworkinghoursin order tomeet deadlines. After hours oncall support is.

  • Work location: SeattleWashington. You maybe requiredto travel to otherlocationsor your assigned location may be changed due to business needs.

  • Physical Demands:While performing the duties of this job the employeeis regularly required tosit talk or hear and use hands to finger handle or feel. The employeeis occasionally required tostand walk reach with hands and arms stoop kneel crouch or crawl and move and/orlift upto 10 pounds.The vision abilitiesto perform this position include close vision.

  • Working Conditions:Work is typically performed in an office environment with a moderate amount of noise (computers printers light traffic). This role routinely uses standard office equipment.
