Town of Erie is hiring for a Code Enforcement/Animal Control Officer who will report directly to a Police Sergeant. In this role you will perform a variety of engaging and impactful tasks related to the interpretation and enforcement of municipal codes and related rules and regulations. As a Code Enforcement Officer you will serve as a vital link between the Town and its residents neighborhood groups and community members providing education and information relating to enforcement and compliance of our Municipal Code. You may also be involved in enforcing the Unified Development Code (UDC) and supporting enforcement of actions requested by Neighborhood Services and Code Inspector. All staff are expected to adhere to the Towns mission vision and TRUEvalues.

Pay Range:

(This role is nonexempt paid at an hourly rate and is eligible for overtime.)

Work Schedule:Available schedules for this role are either Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday working four 10hour day shifts. This position observes Town holidays. The individual must be flexible and able to adjust their schedule according to the departments needs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from High School or GED equivalent required
  • Two (2) years of any combination of customer service management of facilities or staff or animal handling required.
  • Must obtain Colorado Association of Code Enforcement Officers (CACEO) certification within one year of hire date if the training is available.
  • Must possess a valid Drivers License and a satisfactory driving record.

DESIRED QUALIFICATION:

  • One years experience related to inspection law enforcement and nuisance abatement or a related field
  • Experience in animal handling or animal shelter operations
  • Ability to deescalate conflicts or communicate in stressful situations
  • Effective time management and ability to prioritize a highvolume workload while multitasking across multiple tasks
  • Proactive independent and collaborative working style with minimal supervision
  • Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information

Since this position works out of the police department the selected candidate will be required to follow the Erie Police Department Directives in addition to Town of Erie policies and will be held to the same conforms as certified Police Officers.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES PREFERRED:

Knowledge of:

Code enforcement principles practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting; working knowledge of applicable laws standards and regulations relating to nuisance abatement and public safety codes; working knowledge of inspection techniques; working knowledge of standard office software including Microsoft Office products and database software.

Skills in:

Developing working relationships with the general public in common and difficult situations; animal handling; easily assess situations uses customer deescalation techniques to mediate disputes and problem solve to resolution; operate standard office equipment including but not limited to personal computer mobile or portable radio copy and fax machine and phone; operate a motor vehicle and various pieces of animal control equipment; prepare organize and maintain logs and reports of ongoing cases; analyze complex situations problems and data and use sound judgment in drawing conclusions and making decisions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees community organizations and representatives of other public agencies; comprehend and articulate complex facts and relationships in detail and to summarize and write clearly concisely and legibly and to testify in court in an objective concise and professional manner; produce or obtain reports graphs charts photographs or the evidence or exhibits; communicate effectively orally and in writing; follow verbal and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with community members employees supervisors and the general public in a professional manner; work independently; and handle stressful situations and effectively deal with difficult or angry people.

Environmental Factors:

Work is performed in a variety of settings but as many as 710 hours per day may be spent in a vehicle. Employee will be required to travel locally on a constant basis but will rarely be required to travel out of the local area. Work is required in all weather conditions and a variety of outdoor environments which frequently includes uneven surfaces and in traffic or on roads. Employee will be exposed to chemicals and substances including but not limited to oil spills antifreeze hazardous materials hemp feces animal matter gas fumes and dust when assisting with cleanup efforts on a roadway or completing other required duties. Work may involve the use of a computer or other electronic devices competing demands performing multiple tasks working to deadlines. Employee must be able to adapt to changing priorities and conditions be able to problem solve have a positive attitude and embrace that every day will be different and present different challenges.

Physical Factors:

While performing the duties of this job the employee will spend a significant amount of time sitting in a vehicle. Additional time will be spent walking and occasionally climbing or running. Frequent bending kneeling reaching for items holding items and maneuvering equipment is required. Employee will regularly be required to lift objects weighing between 10 and 50 pounds and may occasionally be required to lift objects exceeding 100 pounds with assistance. Visual and hearing abilities are vital: employee must be able to hear and be attentive to surroundings; be able to see colors of vehicles animals; have good peripheral vision; and be able to listen and observe multiple things and conversations at one time.
