Under the direction of the appropriate licensed clinician the Medical Assistant I (MA I) provides clinical care and performs clerical duties to support office/clinic functions. Responsible for the application and removal of all types of casts splints and braces. Will receive workplace education and training to assist providers and the healthcare team in the care of patients.

I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Escorts patients to examination rooms take and record vital signs such as blood pressures temperatures height weight etc. Collects and documents patient health status history and documents and monitors patient progress following standard procedures.
2. Assists in performing routine clinical procedures.
3. Performs cast work for arms hands legs body casts bivalve casts corrective casts cast wedging brace molding and splinting with plaster and fiberglass materials. Instructs patients in cast care.
4. Applies and adjusts orthopedic leg and arm braces canes and crutches and prefabricated fracture braces. Instructs patients in gait training.
5. Assists with the set up and application for procedures such as pin removal wound debridement dressing changes and suture removals. Assist physician/APP with surgical procedures utilizing appropriate aseptic techniques.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Medical Assistant credential approved by the Massachusetts Department of Health (ARMA NHA etc.).
3. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Heart Saver (HS) certification from the American Heart Association. If not available upon hire a BLS/HS must be obtained within 3 months from date of hire. If certification is not obtained within 3 months of hire the employee may be terminated or employee may apply for another position for which they meet the minimum qualifications.

Unless certification licensure or registration is required an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
