Job Description

Position Function:

The Youth & Young Adult Outreach Coordinator is responsible for planning coordinating & attending outreach events across the state of Mississippi for mental health advocacy. The position is funded by the Healthy Transitions grant to address the issues of mental health and to promote effective services for persons aged 1625 living in Mississippi.

Department Profile:

The Department of Psychology is within the College of Arts & Sciences. It houses 25 full time faculty members over 800 undergraduates and about 45 doctoral students in our Cognitive Science and Clinical Psychology Ph.D. programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Identify coordinate and attend approximately 2 outreach events each week across the state of Mississippi. At outreach events connect with community partners to build a resource network and identify referral sources for clients. Also have 1:1 discussions with eligible persons to discuss grant services and assist in referring them to the clinic.
2. Send approximately 20 outreach emails and/or phone calls each day to organizations across the state of Mississippi advertising our services.
3. Travel onfoot as needed to distribute outreach materials and meet with organizations to build partnerships.
4. Responsible for providing peer support services as well as system navigation assistance to individuals with or atrisk of developing serious mental health illness or cooccurring disorders between 16 to 25 years old.
5. Works closely with an assigned evaluator in conducting needs assessments and any followup assessments to identify opportunities to improve outreach assessment and treatment by assisting with plan development and implementation.
6. Work with youth courts schools and stakeholders to identify youth/young adults eligible for the grant. Maintain communication with the established Advisory Board; schedule and facilitate quarterly meetings.
7. Participate on calls and/or in meetings related to Healthy Transition Program Advisory Council Supported Employment/Supported Education Transition Aged Youth DMH and other local and State agencies as requested.
8. Assist with data collection.
9. Conduct presentations and/or provide information upon request relating to the Healthy Transitions Program.
10. Maintain all required documentation include outreach tracking documents event registration and correspondence with community partners.
11. Provide technical assistance when requested.
12. Provides administrative supervision for graduate assistants and student workers.
13. Conduct health education programming focusing on mental health issues.
14. Oversee and distribute the outreach material stock. Work with business staff and Project Director to purchase more as needed.
15. Regular travel will be required to aid with peer support work attend conferences meetings etc.
16. Develop operational guidelines and program evaluation.
17. Manage grant documentation for programming including attending required professional development training.
18. Participate in staff and clinic meetings on a weekly basis.
19. Notify campus entities of national occurrences to keep abreast of local trends in mental health outreach and health education.
20. Collaborate with other departments in the division and university.
21. Identify develop and facilitate programs to increase awareness and knowledge.
22. Promote staff development and conduct inservice training as appropriate.
23. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree in Counseling Counselor Education Health Education Psychology Social Work Marketing Communication or related fields
12 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified

Preferred Qualifications:

Individual must have lived experience with a mental illness and experience in receiving mental health services.
Training in psychology or a mental health related field is preferred but not required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of mental health systems and how to negotiate them to aid in supporting peers with receiving mental healthcare.
2. Knowledge of Microsoft suite of programs (Excel Word PPT etc.).

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
Frequent Externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond ones control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; travel or irregular hours often anticipated; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; involves conflictresolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.
Job frequently requires walking sitting reaching talking hearing handling objects with hands.
Job requires standing stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling and lifting up to 30 pounds.
Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
Job requires frequent travel across the state in an independently owned vehicle.
