New York City is one of the worlds most affluent cities yet 50% of workingaged households are struggling to make ends meet and 1 in 4 children is experiencing food insecurity with communities of color disproportionately impacted. City Harvest is a critical source of nourishment and hope within our city.

Amid an affordability crisis and the rollback of federal nutrition programs the number of New Yorkers in need of food assistance is at a record high. In 2019 there were about 25 million visits to soup kitchens and food pantries. Last year there were more than 46 million visits reflecting the urgent and ongoing demand for food assistance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of Food Transportation safety including partnering with Drivers and Managers on training tracking and continuous improvement. Partner with Director of Risk Management to promote and expand culture of safety.
  • Thought leader and mentor for the transportation team driving growth development and contributes to the departments longterm success.
  • Manage a union environment in partnership with leadership to solve disputes that arise in the workplace under labor agreements
  • Be involved with arbitration reviewing and executing collective bargaining agreements
  • Identify areas to improve collaboration between Transportation and other key stakeholders across the operation and recommend ideas towards greater teamwork.
  • Implement transportation strategies in collaboration with supply chain partners ensuring all programs meet rigorous standards for customer experience financial performance and operational efficiency.
  • Negotiate rates and evaluate providers to ensure costeffective decisions are being made pertaining to the transportation department.
  • Create monitor and maintain KPI reporting to monitor cost and service levels and identify areas of continuous improvement. Create strategies to execute on those recommendations.
  • Recommend routing solutions technologies and best practices to reduce transportation costs by leveraging fleet equipment assets and resources.
  • Provide support to Transportation Managers and fleet Drivers to resolve escalations.
  • Lead Fleet Value Chain Transformation by supporting City Harvests Strategic Plan growth as measured by tonnage rescued and delivered service levels and cost per pound.
  • Work with key internal and external partners to ensure we achieve the optimal balance of speed cost quality service and sustainability.

Education/Experience:

  • 10 years professional experience in logistics supply chain or transportation roles.
  • Bachelors degree preferred or relevant work experience.
  • Experience with managing a union environment and arbitration
  • Experience with reviewing and executing collective bargaining agreements

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of all aspects of fleet operation including practices technologies and equipment.
  • Ability to identify unsafe working conditions and take immediate action to mitigate risk and danger.
  • Demonstrated track record of improving safety performance culture.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects involving process improvements and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment (Lean / Six Sigma certification a plus).
  • Strong conflict resolution skills influencing cooperation and negotiation skills and the ability to use them appropriately.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate with people at all levels of the organization.
  • Customer service oriented by focusing on meeting the needs of business partners and aiming to satisfy their priorities within the framework of our operations model.
  • Flexibility to work early mornings and occasional weekends.
  • Data driven. Demonstrated ability to use analytics in determining strategies to solve business problems.
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Strong business acumen the ability to quickly and effectively understand and deal with situations in a manner that is likely to lead to a positive outcome to the business.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to translate and convey complex problems to a variety of audiences.
  • Valid drivers license and ability to drive in all weather and traffic conditions
  • Pragmatic and committed to continuous improvement
  • Working knowledge of second language preferably Spanish (a plus)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Dynamics CRM; Microsoft GP Inventory Management System (IMS); Microsoft Excel; routing software/technology.
