Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Forestry is seeking a strategicminded leader to manage and direct field operations for the agencys Central Region. The position reports to the Regional Forester.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Supervising the five (5) District Foresters the Regional Fire Specialist and the Watershed
Stewardship Specialist assigned to the Central Region
Managing and overseeing agency operational programs to include fire suppression & prevention forest management urban & community forestry forested watersheds forestland conservation and forest health
Providing direction and guidance regarding implementation of the agencys strategic plan
Establishing regional goals and benchmarks and evaluating performance to ensure measures are met
Continually evaluating program effectiveness and advising the Regional Forester of needs and opportunities
Ensuring staff receive the appropriate training and professional development required to perform their jobs at an exceptional level
Fostering positive relationships among partner groups and organizations
Serving as Acting Regional Forester in their absence
Location: This position will be assigned to the DOFs Central Regional Office located in
Charlottesville. Limited teleworking options are available (typically 1 day a week). Although
commuting from home with a stateowned vehicle is not allowed for this position one will be assigned and parked at the Regional Office to travel to locations away from the office.
Within 6months of hire the successful candidate must reside within 70 miles of the DOFs Central Regional Office in Charlottesville.
Minimum Qualifications
Significant experience in technical and professional forestry work; significant experience supervising and mentoring field personnel; knowledge of effective supervisory techniques and practices; experience and training in wildland fire suppression and incident management; good understanding of silvicultural practices and techniques; experience working with partner groups or organizations; demonstrated excellent oral written and interpersonal communication skills; able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with federal state and local government agencies cooperators forestry consultants forest industry nonprofit organizations volunteer groups and the public; excellent organization and planning skills; proficiency using a PC and Microsoft Office software; able to negotiate different types of forested terrain on foot.
Additional Considerations
Must hold a Virginia Pesticide Applicators License or be able to obtain one within 12 months of employment. This position is not considered an initial responder for wildland fire or other emergency response situations. However the selected candidate is expected to be oncall during Spring and Fall Fire Seasons to direct fire suppression activities or serve in an incident management and support role. Selected candidate is required to pass a criminal background check. In accordance with the Code of Virginia to utilize the title of Deputy Regional Forester one must have received a baccalaureate or higher degree from a Society of American Foresters accredited degree program. Otherwise the successful candidate will use the title of Deputy Regional Manager.
