Required Education: Bachelors degree in a related field AND:

• 24 months of related research experience

Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related work experience in lieu of the Bachelors degree for a total of 72 months of related experience

Departmental Preferences:

• Masters degree or Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology Bioarcheology or Archaeology with experience working on NAGPRA collections
• Minimum of 24 months of related experience with osteology
• Basic knowledge of NAGPRA legislation and a willingness to deepen this understanding
• Museum experience especially working with archaeological collections
• Working knowledge of the archaeology of the Plains or Southeast US
• Demonstrate willingness to work collaboratively and respectfully with tribal representatives and organizations
• Strong communication (verbal and written) and organization skills
• Demonstrated ability to work with computers including database management systems (e.g. Excel)

The Sam Noble Museum Archaeology Department seeks an experienced biological anthropologist or bioarcheologist to carry out analysis of ancestral remains from archaeological sites that are subject to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). This work will include skeletal assessments to determine the minimum number of individuals age and sex. This position will also facilitate the preparation of ancestral remains for repatriation and review museum documentation and other sources to identify associated funerary objects. The successful candidate must demonstrate a sensitivity to and respect for diverse systems of belief while participating in consultations with tribal representatives archaeologists and officials from local state and federal agencies. This position will work under the supervision of the NAGPRA Program Coordinator and in collaboration with the Curator of Archaeology.

Essential Duties:

• Documentation of ancestral remains of individuals from archaeological sites
• Participates in tribal consultations as needed
• Prepares ancestral remains for repatriation
• Identifies prepares tags and catalog new and existing collections including inventorying and rehousing archaeological collections and sensitive NAGPRA collections.
• Creates catalog records in a database management system for archaeological collections and associated documentation
• Assists in project management writing reports and maintaining records and in grant proposal preparation
• Assist with the supervisor of assistants interns and volunteers
• Operates and maintains highly technical research equipment and facilities and assists others in the proper use of equipment.
• Procures supplies and equipment needed for laboratory and field operations.
• May meet with visitors to the collection filling patron requests remotely and in person and give tours present lectures or assist with collectionrelated topics
• May assist with special projects such as exhibit content preparation storage and catalog improvements
• May assist with outreach programs and participate in educational activities as appropriate
• Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position

This fulltime 12month annually renewable professional staff position willwork under the supervision of the NAGPRA Program Coordinator and in collaboration with the Curator of Archaeology.
