Position Summary
This position will provide support in the following areas. The selection evaluation installation and maintenance of electric utility systems are based on precise requirements. Inaccuracies in specifications (e.g. setup integration) can be costly timeconsuming and dangerous. Proper oversight and diligence are essential to ensure accuracy and avoid such issues. All modifications calibration procedures and repairs must be thoroughly documented. Complex diagrams and procedures must be followed to analyze problems and take appropriate corrective actions. Consequence of Error The relays and controls overseen by this position protect equipment valued in the millions of dollars. Improper calibration calculation or testing can lead to catastrophic equipment failure and/or inaccurate system data. Such failures could result in widespread power outages across campus jeopardizing research and university operations and incurring substantial operational costs. Instructions Provided to the Employee General goals objectives schedule requirements and limited technical directions are provided. The employee is expected to work independently utilizing webbased resources vendor manuals diagrams drawings and other written documentation. Guides Regulations Policies and References Used by the Employee The employee should be familiar with the following as they pertain to the UNC electric distribution system: National Electric Safety Code ( NESC ) National Electric Code ( NEC ) OSHA regulations UNC Safety Policies and Procedures Supervision Received by Employee The employee works independently. The Planning Engineer establishes the general planning for the utility system. Maintenance schedules and purchases are reviewed and approved by the supervisor. Variety and Purpose of Personal Contacts This position requires frequent communication and coordination with a wide variety of individuals supervisors and departments. Responsibilities include developing scheduling and implementing control system projects as well as performing daytoday maintenance troubleshooting and repairs. Regular discussions occur with supervisors and coworkers to coordinate work assignments and schedules. The employee must consult with operations personnel before during and after installation and maintenance tasks to ensure effectiveness and to conduct necessary followups. Collaboration with EDS operations vendors contractors engineering firms and EDS staff is also required during the planning and design phases. Physical Efforts The position requires physical activity including bending stooping climbing ladders or scaffolding kneeling working with arms and hands above head for extended periods handling large equipment and lifting/moving up to 50 lbs with or without reasonable accomodation. Work Environment and Conditions Working conditions range from airconditioned environments to hot humid dusty or cold settings. The employee must be able to work in all environmental conditions as needed. The role is based in an industrial setting and may involve exposure to highvoltage equipment working at heights and entering manholes that may contain water. The position must respond to control system problems any time outside of the normal work schedule including nights weekends and/or holidays. This is a critical position. This position is considered an Emergency Duty Position and must report during periods of adverse weather or other University emergency. This position is considered a Communicable Disease Mandatory and must report during a pandemic or other health emergency.

Position Requirements This position requires the ability to concentrate and work with ones hands on small detailed parts and wires. Safety for Others This position must adhere to all safety rules procedures and regulations and comply with all federal state and local health and safety guidelines as well as departmental safety practices and procedures. Dynamics of Work Workloads may increase unexpectedly. This position must be able to adapt to such changes and reprioritize tasks to meet shifting demands. Competencies Required for the Position Positions in this banded class are responsible for consultation investigation evaluation and planning; design design review and approval; and/or determination of environmental and safety impacts of work processes and products (e.g. buildings utilities systems sites mapping or infrastructure). Responsibilities may include: Providing project management oversight which may involve supervising lowerlevel staff Overseeing or reviewing environmental infrastructure and geomatic projects Managing the implementation of projects and plans in accordance with applicable codes and regulations At this level positions typically perform engineering or geomatics work of limited to moderate complexity. Tasks may include: Reviewing evaluating and preparing plans specifications calculations or other engineering documents Providing recommendations to higherlevel engineers for action Conducting inspections audits or investigations Offering consultation and potentially analyzing or designing projects of limited complexity and scope. Knowledge Professional Possession of technical engineering knowledge such as electrical theory and elementary mathematics along with the ability to stay current with trends and developments in the field. This knowledge may be gained through academic study apprenticeship onthejob training or a combination of these. Familiarity with statutes codes regulations industry standards and their application to specific situationstypically acquired through job experience or progression within a similar career path. Ability to understand and apply basic engineering concepts practices and theories involved in the design development review permitting construction maintenance operations or repair of projects or sites as well as their potential environmental and safety impacts.
Preferred Qualifications Competencies And Experience
Experience working with a utility electrical system. Has passed the NCEES Fundamental of Engineering (FE) exam and has EIT professional credentials Experience with a municipality underground electrical system is highly preferred.
