Project Description: What the project entails:
The Passio et Miracula Sancti Olavi a medieval hagiographic text written in Latin in the 12th century catalogues 62 posthumous miracles attributed to Saint Olaf a Norwegian Viking king and our colleges namesake. Documented miracles range from helping a mother find her lost child to restoring sight to the blind to defending pious herring fisherman from giant earworms; a dragon also appears at least once. There has never been a complete translation of this tradition into English or any modern language a task Prof. Helms is currently undertaking in a book project Royal Martyrs of Scandinavia: Saints and Miracles in the Medieval North. Student researchers on this project will assist Prof. Helms with this research by (1) carefully reading the Latin of several miracles per week; (2) discussing translation problems and possible solutions; (3) developing questions about the contexts and meanings of these miracles; and (4) investigating primary and secondary sources in order to try to answer these questions. Students will record their observations and ideas and will meet with Prof. Helms once or twice per week to discuss this work together. Student research in steps (1) and (2) will help Prof. Helms edit and finalize his own translations; research in steps (3) and (4) will help provide the foundation for explanatory notes in the book. CURI students working on this project will learn a great deal about Latin hagiography medieval Christianity the critical use of manuscripts current research topics and trends in medieval hagiographyand of course the blessed martyr St. Olaf himself. By the end of the CURI experience students will have chosen two or three miracles that particularly interest them and showcase their research on a poster and present it at the departments public Classics Table event.
