About the branch:
The Operations and Programs Branch provides essential municipaltype services to unincorporated Yukon communities in a sustainable and efficient manner. The branch develops strategic plans and evaluates service delivery standards to meet the unique needs of unincorporated communities ensuring alignment with budgets and standards.
The branch operates nine ten water treatment plants in unincorporated communities and manages eight nine wastewater treatment facilities. Additionally the branch manages solid waste facilities supports recycling depots and oversees recycling processors in the territory. The branch conducts its work with a diverse matrix of Yukon Government employees consultants contractors and partnerships with First Nations municipalities local governments and nonprofit societies to implement and manage these services. The branch promotes longterm viability and environmental stewardship.
Through its efforts the Operations and Programs Branch plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for residents supporting community wellbeing and development across unincorporated Yukon communities.
About the Position:
This position is responsible for assisting with the daytoday routine operations required to operate and deliver water and wastewater services to the unincorporated communities.
This position is completely fieldbased and requires unaccompanied travel to the sites yearround in all weather conditions. Duties include general labour tasks (shoveling chipping ice painting brushing filling sand boxes etc.) cleaning facilities inside and grounds calibrating equipment exercising valves documenting weekly checks at water plants and seasonal wastewater sites collecting bacteriological samples from Whitehorse peripheral sites and delivering them to Environmental Health developing SOPs communicating issue to Operators talking with the public if approached on site.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a working level of trades skills such as basic plumbing (gluing pipe and configuring parts replacing pump seal etc.) basic mechanical (understanding systems components and reading pressures for diagnosis etc.) and basic electrical tasks (wiring testing for voltage testing actuated valves etc.). This position may be tasked with purchasing parts and providing accurate model numbers and photos for procuring larger parts.
The successful candidate must be highly selfmotivated and prepared to work alone. Good communications skills are essential to discuss issues that arise and have conversations remotely and email about how to fix the issues with coworkers trades vendors and other Government agencies. Once this position is trained they may be required to provide mentorship for Yukon Water and Wastewater Operator Program students (YWWOP) to provide experience at the sites for them to obtain hours to go towards certification.
This position will work towards obtaining a Small Water Certification for water treatment required by Environmental Operator Certification Program (EOCP).
