POSITION
Position Purpose:
CARPENTER
CLASSIFICATION:
Under general supervision of the Foreman perform a variety of rough and finish carpentry duties to maintain remodel and repair all school buildings and offices. Utilize a variety of hand and power tools and knowledge of blueprint reading construct sheds and other similar structures; erect walls ceilings and partitions; construct cabinets and countertops; and repair and install roofs windows and doors etc.
Supervision:
Supervision Scope: Performs duties of a responsible and varied nature requiring independent judgment with assigned responsibilities as well as in the operation and maintenance of a variety of departmental equipment.
Supervision Received: Works under the general direction of the Foreman receiving specific instructions regarding projects and areas of assigned responsibility.

Job Environment:
Work is performed inside and on many or all of the floors including the basement of the assigned building as well as outdoors at which time the incumbent may be exposed to weather extremes of heat and cold temperatures and inclement weather. Incumbent is required to traverse uneven terrain may be required to climb or stoop and is subject to one or more hazards such as those associated with working near heavy equipment chemicals and electricity. Work environment can be moderately noisy. When emergency situations occur the carpenter may be required to respond.
Regularly operates maintenance equipment power hand and/or pneumatic tools.
Interacts frequently with other department employees and the public. Communication is generally in person and involves a communication exchange dialogue.
Errors in judgment may impose undue and substantial expense recovering from errors resulting in significant time loss and delay while correcting undetected errors causing damage to buildings and/or equipment resulting in serious personal injury and/or injury to others.
Essential General Job Functions:

Functions within scope of School Buildings construction and maintenance policies and procedures. Confer with Foreman on matters of materials/tool selection and on certain project priorities.
Perform a variety of rough and finish carpentry duties to maintain remodel and repair all school buildings and offices.
Prepare rough construction drawings as necessary to ensure the proper dimensions and locations of work to be performed. Repair locks doors and windows and perform other related building maintenance and repair duties.
Determine materials and equipment necessary to perform projects and order and pick up building materials as authorized. Coordinate work in progress and work to be performed with outside contractors plasterers electricians plumbers etc. and consult with Foreman as necessary to ensure timely completion of maintenance and construction projects. Ensure adherence to applicable safety rules and regulations. Shovel snow from ramps walkways and stairs and spread sand/salt as necessary.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
Education Training and Experience:
High School diploma; five years verifiable experience as a Carpenter; dependable work history required. A valid MA Construction Supervisors License is .
Special Requirements:
Must possess a valid Massachusetts drivers license. Must successfully pass: Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI) Fingerprintbased State and National Criminal Record Check background check alcohol and drug test and physical with lift test.
Knowledge Ability and Skill:
Knowledge:
Must maintain a current knowledge of standards methods practices tools and equipment in the areas of assigned responsibility according to Massachusetts State Code.
Ability:
Ability to coordinate work follow instruction the operation of applicable tools and related equipment; ability to work effectively under time constraints and meet deadlines.
Skill:
Must be able to perform rough and finish carpentry duties.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing the functions of this job the employee is required to stand walk sit talk and hear for extended periods. Frequently required use hands to finger handle or feel objects tools or controls; reaches with hands and arms crawls and climbs. Specific vision abilities required include close and medium distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to climb ladders at various heights. Incumbent must be able to hear normal sounds distinguish sound as voice patterns and communicate through human speech. The incumbent is required to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 60 pounds.
