General Description / Primary Purpose

The Department of Housing and Residence Life supports the mission of the University and the Division of Academic Affairs by creating a positive living and learning community with the best facilities services programs and customer service for our students. Our responsive staff strive daily to enhance student academic and personal development by fostering a sense of respect for self others and the community placing an emphasis on diversity encouraging personal and civic responsibility while providing opportunities for leadership development.

The Coordinator reports to an Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life within the Department of Housing and Residence Life and is responsible for a variety of functions specific to the administration of the LivingLearning and Theme Community program

Over 100 fulltime parttime and student staff are responsible for providing educational programs and services including 21 residence halls and apartments. The residence halls and apartments form 8 smaller distinct and unique areas throughout the University of North Florida campus. Approximately 4000 students live in our residence halls and apartments.

This is a livein position and as such requires the Coordinator to live on campus in an apartment provided by the department and to adhere to the policies established for the fulltime Residence Life Coordinator Staff.

Job Functions

  • Training and supervision of a Learning Community Assistants staff (up to 16 paraprofessionals)
  • Assist with community development for LivingLearning and Theme Communities
  • Mediate conflict and respond to crisis situations specific to LivingLearning and Theme Communities
  • Advise and counsel LivingLearning and Theme Community residents
  • Oversee administrative procedures and personnel for assigned areas
  • Maintain communication with supervisor through various forms of telecommunication.

Supervision

  • Assist in the selection of Learning Community Assistants (LCA) and Resident Assistants (RA) staff members
  • Supervise train and evaluate LCA student staff members
  • Conduct regular staff meetings with LCAs
  • Provide clear and consistent written expectations for staff members
  • Plan develop and implement ongoing staff development
  • Document and address inappropriate behavior using a progressive discipline model and provide constructive feedback in a timely manner
  • Hold LCA staff accountable in meeting departmental requirements that support student learning
  • Order purchase pick up and deliver supplies for programming and community development activities
  • Supervise staff in assessing student interests & needs planning and evaluating programs
  • Encourage staff to interact with students and provide communitybuilding activities regularly
  • Ensure that staff are available and visible to residents.
  • Encourage staff to foster an atmosphere where students exhibit selfresponsibility and respect the rights of others

LivingLearning and Theme Community Development

  • Implement the goals of the Department of Housing and Residence Life within the LivingLearning and Theme Community Housing model of The University of North Florida.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Housing and Residence Life administration faculty members and the students participating in the LivingLearning and Theme Communities along with the Director for Residence Life Associate and Assistant Directors
  • Foster an atmosphere of academic social cultural and emotional growth
  • Responsible for the wellbeing general atmosphere programs and initiatives of up to 23 livinglearning and theme communities by coordinating efforts with appropriate staff members
  • Help to coordinate annual retreat for the collective livinglearning and theme communities
  • Meet regularly with the leadership for Residence Life and Learning Community Assistants to collaborate on programmatic ideas and activities
  • Work with staff and residents to promote and cultivate a positive community atmosphere
  • Assume a leadership role for a case load of livinglearning and theme community Advisory Boards that fosters and maintains relationships with stakeholders to ensure effective collaboration and support for each livinglearning and theme community
  • Implement the HRL LivingLearning and Theme Community Residential Curriculum within LivingLearning and Theme Communities
  • Assess needs develop outcomes implement learning opportunities and evaluate program initiatives for successful learning and student engagement
  • Support the marketing recruitment and application process for livinglearning and theme communities
  • Implement and assess the success of student leadership opportunities in each community

Student Interaction

  • Establish a positive rapport with students in order to provide individual advisement as needed
  • Act as a role model for students through positive actions and interactions
  • Be available and visible to students during office hours LCA evening programs and weekend programs
  • Identify offer assistance and provide follow up to students who have personal academic health or other concerns
  • Be aware of and sensitive to the needs of all students to help foster a sense of belonging at UNF
  • Develop positive relationships with students in their areas
  • Demonstrate knowledge of campus and community resources
  • Respond to situations and provide written documentation and followup as necessary

Professional Development

  • Promoting the professional development of their staff as well as seeking out opportunities that will enhance their own professional development and provide service to our profession
  • Attend Housing & Residence Life staff training and inservice meetings
  • Present and facilitate discussions at staff training and inservice meetings
  • Serve on Departmental Divisional and University committees as needed
  • Remain open and receptive to constructive feedback
  • Participate in professional associations by attending conferences serving on committees presenting programs etc.

Communication/Information Sharing

  • Be prompt in communicating requested information

  • Keep the supervisor informed in a timely manner of issues concerns activities etc.
  • Disseminate information to staff in a timely manner
  • Express self clearly concisely and appropriately both verbally and in written form
  • Be approachable supportive and pleasant in interactions with staff students parents etc.
  • Listen to and respect the opinions of others
  • Maintain thorough documentation of staff issues student issues building concerns etc.

Professional Cooperation/Partner Relationships

  • Participate in regular meetings with staff departmental leadership and committees livinglearning and theme community advisory boards and campus partners
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with supervisor coworkers and other University personnel
  • Assist in the recruitment and training of new staff members
  • Participate in the overall planning of the Residence Life program and work together with staff in carrying out the established goals and programs
  • Communicate and coordinate with other University departments

Information distribution

  • Monitor budget responsibilities within the position and student groups
  • Respond to student and parent concerns and refer difficult cases to appropriate personnel
  • Attend staff meetings and other meetings as scheduled
  • Serve on applicable department division and university committees

OnCall and Crisis Response

There are evening weekend and holiday responsibilities including but not limited to participation at meetings programs university events and oncall duty rotation.

Departmental Requirements

  • Ability to review written documents manuals journals and publications
  • Operate office equipment including printer/duplicating equipment as well as being able to assist others in doing so.
  • Requires ability to monitor and inspect Housing facilities respond to emergencies recognize fire alarms recognize facial features for security purposes and inspect Housing facilities for safety violations structural integrity cleanliness and suitability for habitation.
  • Ability to identify potential safety hazards such as obstructed stairwells missing smoke detectors and fire extinguishers loose railings cracked sidewalks and landings and to be able to monitor adherence to rules and policies as published in The Residence Handbook.
  • An ability to provide clear instructions and directions in emergency situations where rapid and clear communication is essential.
  • An ability to provide clear and comprehensible communication as related to staff selection training and supervision interaction with parents students faculty staff and other community members in person in writing via radio on the telephone and in enforcing rules regulations and safety functions.
  • Progressive experience in developing and implementing staff training and livinglearning communities is required
  • Demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in fostering respect and appreciation for a range of personalities among students and staff required
  • Ability to ascend stairways to gain access to 2nd and 3rd story apartments (no elevator available) ascend narrow spiral stairways to gain access to loft bedroom units.
  • Expected to be available to work nontraditional hours during residential area openings closings and university breaks (if applicable)
  • Appropriate means of transportation for oncall to respond timely (buildings up to two 2 miles apart)
  • Role models ethics and consistent/fair decisionmaking and support for the Department (including a positive attitude).
  • The Coordinator must be sensitive to the variety of needs of students and will be measured by the ability to successfully interact with students and to assist in their individual needs and concerns.
  • Requires a positive creative selfmotivated person with excellent interpersonal skills willing to work in an environment requiring strong emphasis on providing superior customer service in conformance with the Universitys mission and values.
  • Required to demonstrate a caring and patient attitude utilize strong organizational skills conflict resolution skills and ensure that every effort is made to create satisfied staff students and their families.
  • Collaborate with Housing Operations Staff (i.e. assignments maintenance and custodial professional and clerical staff).
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Required Qualifications: This position requires either (a) Masters degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization; (b) Bachelors degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization and two years of experience directly related to the job functions; or (c ) 6 years of direct experience.
