Job Details:

Mercer University is searching for an Assistant Director of Research for Music and Arts on the Macon Georgia campus.


Responsibilities:

The Assistant Director of Research supports the strategic development coordination and implementation of interdisciplinary research initiatives for the Enhancing Worship for Neurodivergent Children Through Music and the Arts program. The Assistant Director will play a key role in designing and managing research projects fostering scholarly collaboration and producing highimpact academic and public scholarship.

Duties include:

  • Oversee daytoday operations of the Enhancing Worship for Neurodivergent Children Through Music and the Arts program.

  • Collaborate with the Director to shape and lead the programs research agenda.

  • Design conduct and manage original research projects aligned with the centers mission.

  • Organize symposia lectures and researchrelated events to promote community and scholarly engagement.

  • Represent the research unit in internal and external meetings fostering partnerships with academic and cultural institutions.

  • Develop research instruments.

  • Ensure compliance with institutional research policies and ethical standards.

  • Administer Surveys.

  • Plan and conduct ethnographic fieldwork.

  • Analyze data.

  • Disseminate research findings in the form of presentations and publications.

  • Collaboratively develop congregational resources based on the research.

  • Assist in supervising graduate and undergraduate researchers.

Qualifications:

A masters in Ethno/musicology sacred music sociology religious studies psychology or related field and two or more years of professional experience with exceptional success in a related field is required. In lieu of professional experience a terminal degree is required or we will consider a combination of relevant professional experience and experience gained in the relevant field while pursuing a terminal degree. Candidates with a Ph.D. (or equivalent terminal degree) in Ethno/musicology sacred music sociology religious studies psychology or related field who have completed their terminal degree by September 2025 are preferred.

Candidates must have a valid drivers license and be insurable by the universitys carrier.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Familiarity with and respect for Christian religious traditions and musical worship.

  • Must be comfortable interacting with neurodivergent children for extended periods and act professionally in such environments.

  • Demonstrated record of successful research in the form of presentations or publications.

  • Familiarity with both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.

  • Excellent writing communication and presentation abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

  • Commitment to collaborative and inclusive research practices.

  • Must possess a valid Georgia drivers license and maintain a clean driving record.

  • Must be eligible for and maintain approval as an organizational driver per Mercers driver authorization policies.

  • Must be able to drive to and from fieldwork or offsite locations as needed.

  • Must be able to transport students or participants in Mercerowned or rented vehicles in accordance with safety and liability standards.

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations such as ability to see both near and far and hearing.
