Job Description

Training for newly hired drivers will take immediately upon hire.

The Des Moines Public Schools is looking for Part Time Bus Drivers!

All new parttime bus drivers are eligible to enroll for family medical dental and vision benefits. This will also include disability and life insurance to individual employees.


SIGN ON BONUS!
The Des Moines Public Schools is offering a sign on bonus for ALL newlyhired bus drivers! Details are listed belowAPPLY TODAY!

$2000SignOnBonus:

  • $500.00 paid after 30 actual working days.
  • $1000.00 paid after the successful completion ofthe probationary period of 90actual working days.
  • $500.00 paid after 180 actual workdays.

The District is willing to train and assist you with obtaining a CDL within 60 days of hire.

**Special $5000 SignOn Bonus for candidates who have current CDL and proper valid endorsements of school bus passenger and air brakes!**

$1000.00 paid after 30 actual working days.
$2000.00 paid after the successful completion of the probationary period of 90actual workingdays.
$2000.00 paid after the successful completion of previous 180working days.

*Disclaimer:
Previous DMPS bus drivers who have worked for the District within the past six months from resignation date will not be eligible for the sign on bonus.

Hiring Requirements:
Work morning and afternoon shift daily other hours may be available.
Twenty (20) years of age or older.
Ability to obtain Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within a 60 day period.
Ability to obtain State of Iowa School Bus Operators permit.
For internal candidates:a meets or better evaluation no employee conduct documents the past 12 months and no more than 10 days of unauthorized absences the last 12 months. See transfer language for more details.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Operate a school bus in a safe and efficient manner to ensure the safety of passengers. This position requires continuous use of independent judgment. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the Transportation Department.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Operate the school bus in a safe effective and proficient manner.
  2. Provide guidance and training to bus associates in the performance of their respective assignments and duties.
  3. Comply with all pretrip and posttrip procedures and expectations.
  4. Report all vehicle damage and/or repair items using established procedures and forms.
  5. Ensure interior and exterior cleanliness and appearance of the school bus.
  6. Maintain appropriate student behavior on the bus and report policy infractions as appropriate.
  7. Assist in providing the necessary safeguards to prevent loss of or damage to property or failure of mechanical equipment.
  8. Assist in the inspection operation and use of specialized equipment for students who may have additional accommodations including wheelchairs safety vests etc.
  9. Complete Medicare paperwork.
  10. Utilize a computer for District and Department email communications and online training courses.
  11. Attend professional development.
  12. Adhere to District policies/prcedures and Department work rules.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position):

  1. Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  2. Maintain confidentiality.
  3. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public students and other employees.
  4. Assist with other duties as may be assigned.


HIRING SPECIFICATIONS:


Required Education and Experience:

  1. Twenty (20) years of age or older.
  2. Ability to obtain Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) prior to hire.
  3. Ability to obtain Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within a 60day period from date of hire.
  4. Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Iowa school bus operators authorization.
  5. Maintain a valid DOT physical.
  6. Maintain a Motor Vehicle Record that meets District Guidelines.
  7. For internal candidates meets or better rating on employee evaluation criteria established by the district 10 or fewer days of absence during the past 12 months zero (0) incidents involving formal discipline on file and meets all other stated requirements of the job posting.

  1. Ability to support the behavioral health and safety needs of students including those with additional accommodations.
  2. Ability to use computer to take required online
  3. Ability and willingness to accept the responsibility of the position.
  4. Ability to promote a spirit of cooperation with others.
  5. Working knowledge of city and school
