****Applicants seeking shortterm or parttime work with the University of Hawaii may apply for Casual Hire appointments which include administrative professional and technical (APT) or instructionaltype positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits provided to regular Board of Regents or Civil Service employees. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for fulltime employees and up to 1 calendar year for parttime employees.

Position Description:

Under the general direction of the Hoapili Principal Investigators the ES 495 and 496 Instructor will provide the following:

Teach ES 495 Hawaii Labor History to Native Hawaiian students in the NHSS sheltered summer institute program.

Coteach ES 496 Special Topics in Ethnic Studies to Native Hawaiian students in the NHSS sheltered field school program.

Incorporate traditional Hawaiian knowledge and texts into the curriculum.

Other related tasks and/or duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

Masters degree in Hawaiian Studies Language Linguistics Education Ethnic Studies or closely related field

Teaching experience in college level courses

Experience in the field of Native Hawaiian or indigenous education

Demonstrated ability to present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing and verbally


Desired Qualifications:

PhD in Linguistics Education or closely related field

Evidence of ability to teach effectively

Ability to teach Ethnic Studies while teaching toward the learning outcomes of ES 495 and ES 496 at UH Manoa

Familiarity with a range of perspectives and experiences of Native Hawaiian students in the social sciences

Familiarity with institutional barriers for Native Hawaiian students in higher education and best practices for Native Hawaiian student success
