Description
- Hennepin County Public Works is seeking a Principal Engineering Technician to join the Design division within the Transportation Project Delivery department. This position will work as part of a team to deliver roadway reconstruction projects with opportunities for professional and technical growth through training and working with other experienced roadway design professionals.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both onsite at the Public Works Facility 1600 Prairie Drive Medina MN 55340 and remote as job duties require. There is no public transportation to this facility. Work hours are flexible between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. While this position is designated as hybrid based on current requirements hires must live in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefitearning employees is inperson in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In this position you will:- Direct train and check the work of other technicians; ensuring deadlines are met.
- Direct and perform tasks in the design and review of roadway design elements for complex road and bridge projects that include but are not limited to utility tabs and plans alignment plans and tabs removal construction profile intersection detail sheets construction staging plans erosion control turf establishment plans and cross section sheets.
- Assist or lead project coordination efforts to include utilities agencies residents and other county departments.
- Develop and maintain expertise in the preliminary and final design of roadway design elements.
- Support other technicians and design squads by applying roadway design criteria that include complex preliminary geometric layouts determining typical construction sections surface modeling profile grades drainage detail design standards specification items preparing and checking and reviewing cost estimates.
- Assist during development of federal and/or state required documents.
Need to have:- One of the following:
- Eight years of experience in technical nonprofessional highway land survey geographic information systems application building and energy automation or related engineering work.
- Current Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level4.
- Licensed Land Surveyor (LS) Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) Certification or Licensed Surveyor in Training (LSIT) may be substituted for 5 years of experience.
- Note: One of the following may be substituted for one year of the required experience:
- Completion of an approved highway/civil engineering technology building automation systems/heating ventilation air conditioning or land surveying training program.
- 30 college semester credits or more in mathematics geography computer science or engineeringrelated technical courses.
- A valid drivers license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County drivers permit.
Nice to have:- Experience:
- Designing and reviewing preliminary and detailed public works roadway reconstruction plans.
- Directing a work team and/or coordinating work with other internal department divisions.
- Utilizing complex computer software such as CAD (OpenRoads InRoads Geopak Civil 3D or equivalent) or spreadsheets.
- Reading and interpreting engineering design manuals technical memorandums construction plans specifications and other jobrelated forms.
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of traffic engineering civil engineering engineering construction materials equipment and practices.
- Ability to:
- Maintain effective relationships with contractors residents and coworkers.
- Schedule prioritize and balance several tasks/projects.
- Work independently and in teams with minimal lead worker direction.
