The Supervisor of Secondary Literacy serves in a critical leadership role and provides direct supervision of Literacy Specialists Reading Specialists and librarians. This role provides direct support to building administrators to support and enhance skill development of secondary English teachers The Supervisor ensures the successful implementation of the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) Writing Performance Assessment (WPA) and divisionwide literacy initiatives by monitoring instructional quality coordinating professional learning and supporting principals and teachers in achieving literacy growth targets.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide direct instructional leadership and support to administrators and all secondary English teachers ensuring effective delivery of the districts curriculum and literacy initiatives.
  • Supervise and guide English teachers in the implementation of highquality Tier I instruction intervention strategies and evidencebased literacy practices aligned with the VLA.
  • Collaborate with school administrators to monitor English classroom instruction set improvement goals and provide targeted instructional coaching through Literacy Specialists and Reading Specialists.
  • Directly supervise the divisions Literacy Specialists and Reading Specialists ensuring their coaching cycles modeling and professional learning activities lead to measurable instructional improvement.
  • Develop and manage annual work plans for Literacy and Reading Specialists aligned to division literacy goals and the Virginia Literacy Act.
  • Create and monitor professional learning opportunities to ensure consistent support for secondary English teachers through datainformed collaboration and instructional followup.
  • Supervise librarians to ensure library programs effectively support literacy goals equitable access to diverse materials and curriculum alignment.
  • Oversee the districts book review and approval process ensuring compliance with selection and reconsideration policies and supporting librarians in curating highquality collections.
  • Lead professional learning for librarians focused on supporting literacy skill development research practices and information literacy aligned with state standards.
  • Supervise the implementation and scoring of the Writing Performance Assessment (WPA) ensuring consistent training calibration and data analysis practices.
  • Oversee the administration of common assessments for grades 68 and ensure data from VALLSS IXL and other tools is used effectively to guide English instruction and intervention planning.
  • Support all stakeholders in developing and monitoring Student Reading Plans for atrisk students in compliance with the VLA.
  • Lead the design and delivery of professional learning for secondary Administrators English teachers Literacy Specialists Reading Specialists and librarians.
  • Coordinate divisionwide PL days gradeband PLCs and ongoing jobembedded coaching to build teacher capacity in reading and writing instruction scaffolding and academic discourse.
  • Ensure all required VLA professional learning is completed and that teachers receive targeted support aligned with instructional walkthrough and assessment data.
  • Coordinate divisionwide Literacy Walkthroughs focused on improving secondary English instruction and literacy practices across content areas.
  • Supervise specialists and teachers by providing timely feedback and followup support to teachers based on walkthrough trends.
  • Collaborate with administrators to develop and monitor schoollevel literacy improvement plans tied to walkthrough data and assessment outcomes.
  • Support the development and implementation of the districts Literacy Plan and ensure full compliance with Virginia Literacy Act mandates for middle and high schools.
  • Collaborate on the Literacy Corner website with the divisionlevel team to provide teachers librarians and specialists with ongoing access to instructional resources model lessons and assessment tools.
  • Collaborate with SPED EL and Gifted teams to ensure literacy supports are differentiated and accessible for all students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Valid Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with endorsements in English Reading Specialist and/ or Administration & Supervision.
  • Masters degree or higher in Reading Curriculum & Instruction and/or Educational Leadership.
  • Minimum of five years of successful secondary teaching experience with demonstrated success in instructional leadership and teacher supervision.
  • Expertise in adolescent literacy development writing instruction and professional learning facilitation.
  • Experience supervising instructional staff instructional coaching and managing crossdepartment collaboration.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIESMust demonstrate leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively and cooperatively with students teachers administrators divisionlevel staff and parents/guardians in providing the best possible educational environment.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
  • Directly supervises the divisions Literacy Specialists and Reading Specialists including but not limited to the instructional and student support staff of secondary literacy.
  • Participates in the hiring process and makes hiring decisions for other employees.
  • Instructs trains coaches and mentors other employees.
  • Schedules (determine hours worked time off) reviews and monitors the work of other employees.
  • Completes written feedback and evaluations of other employees.
  • Makes recommendations and provides support for the plans of improvement of other employees.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • Reliable transportation is necessary.
  • Travel within the City of Lynchburg as needed.
  • Travel for Professional Learning conferences and training as needed.
