Job Summary

Health Promotion and Wellness Graduate Assistants support the mission of Health Promotion and Wellness and are an integral part of a team that is committed to leading wellbeing initiatives that support students staff and faculty of Illinois State. Graduate Assistant staff support planning development and implementation of public health strategies designed to address health and wellness priorities and further diversity equity and inclusion at the Institution.

40% Prevention Education and Outreach Peer Education and Advocate Programs:
Cocoordinate the planning and facilitation of weekly SERC Executive Board meetings general meetings lead recruitment and outreach initiatives and colead fall/spring retreats.
Maintain up to date compliance records for SERC programs meetings events. (IL SA Higher Ed Act)
Coordinate the evaluation of all SERC workshops and meetings.
Initiate collaborations with other departments community agencies and student groups to identify partnerships and outreach opportunities.
Update Redbird Life Site for SERC and SERC google drive on a weekly basis
Coordinate the Sexual Violence Awareness efforts throughout the academic year alongside SERC and WGSS.
Attend all events SERC is coordinating and present.

60% Shared Responsibilities:
Cofacilitate the Project Connect groups twice per semester. 4 sessions each.
Assist with bimonthly popup screenings.
Assist guests with their needs as they visit the Health Promotion and Wellness department.
Cofacilitate the Alcohol Education Class on a biweekly basis.
Maintain up to date compliance records for Alcohol Education and send completed sanction class lists to SCCR.
Lead the Stress and Mindfulness workshop as needed (12 per week).
Support the restroom messaging program by placing flyers in buildings across campus every 3 weeks.
Serve as a departmental representative for outreach events the department coordinates and participates in throughout the academic year. Examples: Welcome Week Festival ISU Fall Preview Popup screenings Nutrifest Sexual Assault Awareness events Winterfest PAWSitively Stress Free events monthly during Midterms and Finals Week (fall and spring semesters).
Research content for Health Promotion and Wellness prevention efforts (as needed).

Additional Information

Organizational Relationships:
Health Promotion and Wellness functions as a team so Graduate Assistants will receive guidance from all professional staff and please ask questions as they arise. A professional staff supervisor will work closely with Graduate Assistants to guide daytoday duties to feel fully supported in their roles. All staff including Graduate Assistants report to the Director of Health Promotion and Wellness.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$1510 for 0.5 FTE appointment

Required Qualifications

1. Eligible for appointment as per the requirements in the Graduate Assistant Handbook which can be found at Must be a degree seeking graduate student at Illinois State University in one of the following academic programs: Kinesiology and Recreation Communications Psychology Educational Administration and Foundations English Health Sciences Masters of Social Work Sociology

Graduate Assistants are considered preprofessional positions within the department.
Take the initiative to learn all areas within Health Promotion and Wellness.
Use effective written/verbal communication and solid organization skills.
Attend suggested trainings that develop competence around diversity equity and inclusion.
Work collaboratively treat coworkers with respect and thrive in a team environment.
Speak directly with one another when there are misunderstandings. Avoid discussing conflicts with those not involved.
Maintain appropriate boundaries with students interns and coworkers.
Effectively communicate and formally present information on sensitive topics aligned with the mission of Health Promotion and Wellness. Must not contradict the departments mission when representing Health Promotion and Wellness. Staff also represent the Division of Student Affairs and Illinois State University.

Work Hours

Graduate Assistantships with Health Promotion and Wellness are preprofessional staff positions that adhere to the University Administrative Calendar. The Administrative Calendar follows a typical work schedule during times when academic courses do not meet (i.e. fall break week after December finals week before January classes begin and spring break). Preprofessional Graduate Assistants work 20 hours per week Monday Friday and into the evening with possible weekend shifts each month. A set weekly schedule will be arranged once the Graduate Assistant begins their role.

Illinois State University student employees are restricted to no more than 28 hours per week of oncampus employment for all positions held. International students are restricted by their visa status to no more than 20 hours per week of oncampus employment when the university is in session but may work up to 28 hours per week when the university is not in session. Please contact the Office of International Student and Scholar Services for guidance on visa restrictions on work hours. The University cannot grant exceptions to visa status rules/laws.
