Job Description

Job Description: Youth Leader (After School)

Compensation: $18.00 an hour parttime; approximately 20 hours per week; no benefits package at this time; nonexempt.

The mission of Martin Luther King Community Center (MLK Center) is to educate youth empower families and build community through quality multigenerational programs that advocate for our neighbors promote racial justice and provide a peaceful space to connect.

MLK Center is seeking a Youth Leader to join our team in the elementary afterschool program. Youth leaders create a safe environment for young people provide guidance and mentorship and organize educational and recreational activities in the MLK Centers afterschool environment. The program supports students K8 and this position specifically leads a group of fourth and fifthgrade students from IPS James Whitcomb Riley School #43.

This parttime position is based on renewable grant funds with hours from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Additional programming and/or professional development hours may be available during school breaks.

Based on our partnership with Butler University College of Education and James Whitcomb Riley School #43 in IPS the program focuses on academic achievement and positive youth development
. All instructional activities are coordinated based on student data and program evaluation data. Training and coaching are provided around reading and explicit instruction through the lens of literacy is essential for academic social and economic success. Literacy is a basic human right.

This position reports to the Elementary Site Coordinator and receives literacyfocused training support and classroom management.


The typical duties of this position include:

  • Support students and teachers during tutoring and structured activities.
  • Completing weekly exit tickets to report on classroom successes and challenges.
  • Lead structured nontutoring activities and adherence to the program schedule
  • Support assessment process including overseeing rotations.
  • Support codevelopment of and preparation for nonUFLI literacy rotations.
  • Organizing classroom supplies and updating bulletin boards based on lesson plans provided by the coordinator and literacy coach.
  • Participating in a weekly training provided by Butler College of Education.
  • Reinforcing the values of love and respect when students are fighting
  • Participating in a oneonone coaching session with the site coordinator.
  • Driving a 14passenger van to transport children to and from school and to home after programming
  • Reporting on the issue of suspected child abuse or neglect to your team leader
  • Other duties as assigned

  • You understand how literacy affects dropping out of school poverty and incarceration. Demonstrate the ability to implement curriculum for K5 students effectively create developmentally appropriately structured activities aligned with learning objectives and keep learners engaged.
  • You believe people are creative resourceful and whole. Everyone experiences emotional trauma poverty racism and toxic stress in his or her way. With the right support we can all grow and find ways to meet challenges.
  • You seek a role to realize passion to help children grow and learn. Demonstrate desire ability and drive to engage encourage and keep youth safe enthusiastically. Working knowledge of MLKs missiondriven approach and student and community profile.

  • Youth Leaders offered this position must complete background checks and pass a drug screen before starting work. A valid drivers license and clean driving record are required.
