Job Description

Provides leadership and guidance in the development administration implementation and coordination of custodial and maintenance services and facilities services to other departments/schools. Specifically responsible for supporting the campus safety program and compliance implementation and facilities planning. Provides necessary liaison between the Facilities Department and department heads/school deans and their units in problem resolution.

Pay: $per year

Location: Office location is East Chicago but frequent travel to other campus locations in Crown Point and Gary will be required.

Position Reports to: Vice Chancellor for Administration/ Finance
Position Supervises: Assistant Director of Facilities and Maintenance Technicians

Major Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for developing a system to identify and prioritize regional R&R projects and for developing a longrange R&R plan (510 years).

  • Participates in the planning of longterm campus facilities needs including new leaseholds new construction and cooperative or joint use facilities.

  • Responsible for insuring compliance with State and College policies on advertising bidding and awarding construction contracts.

  • Provides design and engineering support for campus projects and monitors the work in progress for these facility improvement projects.

  • Responsible for preparing documentation needed at the campus and College wide levels to obtain facility improvement and new acquisition project approvals.

  • Responsible for development of the physical plant budget and expenditure control of assigned funding.

  • Responsible for calculating the Building Utilization efficiencies for all facilities for the campus and for reporting such information to regional and Systems Office personnel.

  • Reviews and approves the requests for contract maintenance when a project is beyond the capabilities of departmental workforces.

  • Safety and Building Access Campus Safety oversees investigation and reporting of any departmental injuries investigates and recommends corrections for safety hazards reported monitors the campus safety plan and initiates action to correct safety hazards observed.

  • Establishes the departmental safety program to include compliance with OSHA standards hazard communication required record keeping and training of Facilities staff.

  • Responsible for fire programs in all buildings

  • Staff Development and Supervision Conducts performance appraisals of staff directly supervised; approves performance appraisals and is responsible for monitoring performance of staff indirectly supervised. Ensures that all departmental job descriptions are updated annually.

  • Provides training for staff in safety and correct maintenance and cleaning procedures

  • Maintains employee records approves time sheets approves the recommended use of overtime and vacation weekend holiday and special holidays coverage; monitors employee absenteeism.

  • Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings. Responsible for all discipline within the Department. Resolves conflicts through the chain of authority

Facilities Services

  • Directs supervises and evaluates the Asst. Director for Facilities and Maintenance Technicians

  • Maintains contact with campus faculty and staff to evaluate conditions of their work areas and effectiveness of services provided by the Facilities Department

  • Oversees campusparking operations; shared responsibility with the Director of Campus Safety and Security.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree required

  • Ten years work experience related to construction management or physical plant maintenance or Industry related certifications with seven years related work experience

  • Three years supervisory experience is required.

  • Must be able and willing to travel to East Chicago Crown Point and Gary on a regular basis as well as occasional regional or statewide travel.
