Job Description: American Sign Language Teacher Grades 712
Reports To: Principal or Designee
FLSA Status: Exempt
JOB SUMMARY: Seeking a fulltime ASL instructor American Sign Language Teacher
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain appropriate licenses and training hours as required.
- Present engaging lessons in the subject area.
- Use approved curriculum for ASL delivery.
- Display strong communication skills.
- Prepare clear and timely lesson plans.
- Provide clear learning objectives for students.
- Provide supportive and effective classroom management for students.
- Provide a safe and orderly environment for students.
- Plan effective and appropriate daily lessons and units.
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required.
- Attend all required meetings.
- Effectively and productively collaborate with peers.
- Be committed to continuous improvement.
- Provide complete lesson plans for substitute.
- Attend work regularly.
- Attend parent/teacher conferences.
- Perform other duties assigned as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

- Have native or nearnative fluency in American Sign Language
- Show competency and a comprehensive understanding of sign language with an emphasis on communicating using the American Sign Language techniques.
- Must have extensive knowledge of Deaf culture and experience interacting within the Deaf community.
- Have a Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution of higher education in Deaf studies Deaf education or hearing impaired education.
- Prior teaching experience is preferred.
- Have a valid Ohio Teaching License in American Sign Language from ODE.
- ASLTA Certification is also preferable.
- Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrated ability to successfully work with adolescent students and public.
- Language Skills: Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students parents staff or members of the community. Ability to draft simple correspondence and some routine reports. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Proficiency in the usage of database software internet software email and word processing software. Ability to proficiently use the following programs strongly preferred: MS Word Outlook and Excel. Ability to type accurately and proficiently.
- Ability to appropriately communicate with students teachers parents members of the community.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions.
Additional Working Conditions:
- Occasional interaction among unruly children
- Occasional exposure to blood bodily fluids and tissue
- Weekend/evening/summer work
- Requirement to lift and carry upt to a maximum of 50 pounds and push/pull up to a maximum of 100 pounds various supplies and/or equipment
- Frequent requirement to sit stand walk talk hear see read speak reach stretch with hands and arms crouch kneel climb and stoop
