Job Description
The Department of Biology is seeking an Associate Research Scientist.
The Sung Laboratory in the Department of Biology at the University of Iowa is seeking a full time Associate Research Scientist to conduct research in auditory science with a focus on understanding the mechanisms underlying hearing and hearing loss. Deafness and hearing loss are widespread and can be caused by aging loud noise exposure ear infections or ototoxic drugs. Emerging research increasingly highlights the critical role of the immune system in the development and progression of hearing loss. The Sung lab specifically aims to understand how the immune system within the cochlea (the hearing organ) contributes to hearing function and dysfunction particularly in the context of ototoxic drug exposure. This position will conduct research in auditory science with a focus on understanding the mechanisms underlying hearing and hearing loss.
This position is eligible forhybridwork within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with theremote work program and related policiesandemployee travel policy when working at a remote location.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with daytoday operations in the laboratory.
- Design generate analyze interpret experimental data and draft manuscripts.
- Help maintain essential mouse lines and oversee a mouse breeding colony.
- Prepare gather organize data and assist in reviewing for grant submissions.
- Supervise and train junior lab members in experimental techniques.
- Contribute to mentoring trainees in the lab.
- Manage and organize research data ensuring proper documentation archiving and compliance with institutional data policies.
- Help coordinate lab meetings seminars and presentations fostering a collaborative and productive research environment.

Education Required
- Ph.D. in auditory sciences immunology anatomy neuroscience cell biology molecular biology or other related fields.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant research experience.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within the lab with collaborators and with broader research community is strongly preferred.
- Ability to work with mouse models.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Working with experimental mouse models including:
- Mouse handling.
- Maintaining essential mouse lines.
- Overseeing a mouse breeding colony.
- Working with nontumor bearing normal mice.
- Working with Tumorbearing mice.
- Auditory testing that include both Auditory brainstem response (ABR) and Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE).
- Experimental skills with any of the following:
- Cochlear wholemount dissection.
- Cochlear midmodiolar sectioning.
- Cell culture.
- Molecular techniques (e.g. Western blot qRTPCR ELISA Flow cytometry etc.).
- Immunohistochemistry.
- Fluorescence in situ hybridization.
- Confocal imaging.
- Single cell/nucleus RNASequencing.
- Computer R coding skills.
