Distribution System Technologist Apprentice

The Distribution System Technologist (DST) Apprentice position offers a chance to join our dynamic team in building Torontos electricity grid powering a bright future together.
The Distribution System Technologist Apprentice operates installs commissions constructs repairs maintains and decommissions all types of substation equipment protective relay and control systems station metering distribution automation equipment and SCADA systems including completion of all associated work orders specifications engineering drawings reports and work procedures under the direction of a Distribution System Technologist.
The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct policies and internal control procedures laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.
KEY RESPONSIBILTIES:
- Plan and coordinate work activities as related to the project
- Install inspect maintain and repair all types of substation equipment protective relay and control systems station metering distribution automation equipment and SCADA RTU systems
- Commission test and approve for service all substation distribution equipment protection and control systems station metering distribution automation equipment SCADA RTU systems and substation communication systems
- Provide operating instructions for substation equipment
- Perform cable terminations and testing of stations primary and secondary cable
- Commission test and maintain all substation building protection systems including fire/smoke detection and suppression
- Install repair maintain substation building equipment as required
- Conduct switching
- Record on/off work protection
- Test repair and maintain high voltage test equipment and live line tools
- Complete maintain and update work orders engineering drawings specifications reports work procedures and any other associated records/documentation
- Troubleshoot and diagnose substation equipment failures distribution automation equipment failures protection and control system failures SCADA failures communication system and station metering failures
- Perform infrared inspections
- Install and maintain switchgear stenciling and locking equipment
- Prepares reports determining cause of failure proposed remediation activities risk management alternatives postrepair test procedures and implements accepted recommendation
- Identify defects contraventions and dangers
- Operates electric cranes in stations
REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with one of the following: Electrical/Electromechanical Technologist diploma; Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree; a Bachelor of Technology degree with a concentration on Energy Systems Engineering may be considered (August 2025 graduates accepted)
- Must have a valid G and be eligible to obtain a DZ License in the Province of Ontario
- Related handson field experience preferred
- Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) Certification from the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) preferred
- Demonstrated proficiency in a PC environment and engineering software applications
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
- Safety performance and familiarity with utility safety regulations and practices; adopts safe and efficient work practices participates in job planning risk reduction and reports problems
