Hours:Full time Contracted Canada Summer Jobs 35hrs/week for 8 weeks.
Reports to: Food Security Coordinator and ultimately Director of Community Programs

Fernwood Neighbourhood House (FNH) is a vibrant multiservice organization working on the unceded lkn (Lekwungen) lands in Victoria BC. Position Overview:
The Food Security Intern plays a key role in fostering positive relationships with community members volunteers and partner organizations while supporting Fernwood NHs community food security work. The ideal candidate is passionate about creating inclusive and welcoming garden spaces growing food for community use and engaging others in handson learning. They will support the GFB programs on delivery and packing day and will play a vital role in the programs operation over the summer. The Food Security Intern will work with local farms to harvest some of the produce for the Good Food Box program. Additionally they will help coordinate and maintain the community gardens including Native Meadows & Community Orchard and lead in creating engaging content for social media. They ensure that gardens are productive accessible and aligned with Fernwood Neighbourhood Houses values of equity dignity and community care. They will lead engaging volunteer work parties in the Community Gardens. Food systems knowledge relationshipbuilding and a commitment to food justice are essential to this role.
Key Responsibilities:
Support the operations of the Good Food Box
Create social media content for the Good Food Box
Community Garden maintenance
Grow and harvest food for the kitchen
Recruit and coordinate Fernwood Neighbourhood Houses garden volunteers; create and facilitate volunteer opportunitiesin the gardens
Support with Get Growing! Victoria program
Organize promote and facilitate garden work parties
Host garden tours for Fernwood Neighbourhood House programs and public
Create content for community garden events
Fernwood Neighbourhood House kitchen support
Build and maintain relationships with local food security and urban agriculture organizations
Research and develop content around food systems areas
Distribute marketing content around partner agencies to advertise the Good Food Box
Other duties as assigned
Working Conditions
Ability to lift and move boxes of vegetables wheelbarrows of soil heavy wheeled carts. (up to 40lbs).
Ability to work positively in a busy and loud environment.
Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions.
Ability to stand for long periods of time squat crouch and bend frequently.
Requirements & Qualifications
Knowledge of plants and gardening
Drivers License
Ability to work collaborativelyin team settings and work positively in a shared work environment.
Ability to problemsolve prioritize tasks and take initiative.
Demonstrated ability to follow instructions take initiative in completing assigned tasks and remain accountable for actions outcomes and work quality.
Experience using social media.
Eligibility Requirements (Canada Summer Jobs):
To be eligible for this position candidates must:
Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
Be a Canadian Citizen permanent resident or person granted refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
Be legally entitled to work in British Columbia.
Note: International students are not eligible for this position. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Candidates who progress through our selection process will be required to provide the following before an employment agreement is finalized.

All employees within Fernwood Neighbourhood House require a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check upon being hired.
Compensation & Benefits:
After 3 months of employment you are eligible for paid sick time as per the ESA.

Unionized Position
Fernwood Neighbourhood House is a unionized workplace and this position is part of the BC General Employees Union (BCGEU). We are currently negotiating our first collective agreement. The compensation package for this role reflects current wages and benefits with adjustments anticipated once the collective agreement is finalized.
