Job Description

Boarding Supervisor

NRL Cowboys House (NRLCH) is a boarding facility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from rural and remote locations across Queensland where access to secondary education is unavailable. Managed by the Cowboys Community Foundation the charity arm of the Cowboys Rugby League Football Club NRL Cowboys House is a modern purposebuilt residency centrally located in Gulliver Townsville.

Living in a safe culturally appropriate and engaging residential environment approximately 100 students actively participate in education employment and training opportunities. Our mission is to develop proud strong educated Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander men and women to be future leaders and role models for their families and communities.

Managed by the Cowboys Community Foundation the charity arm of the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys NRL Cowboys House is a joint initiative between the National Rugby League North Queensland Cowboys the Queensland Government and the Australian Government. The NRL Cowboys House provides accommodation for 97 students in modern purposebuilt residences. The facilities are centrally located in Gulliver Townsville and have easy access to the citys private and public secondary schools and major sport and recreation clubs and facilities.

We are seeking applications for responsible and nurturing Boarding Supervisors whose primary role is to support the academic social and emotional wellbeing of students residing at NRL Cowboys House. Boarding Supervisors act in loco or in place of parents enabling students in our care to reach their full potential and ultimately transition into positive and productive adulthood.

Boarding Supervisors must communicate effectively with students and staff to develop positive relationships and create an engaging home away from home ensuring our students feel safe respected and encouraged. This role supports and assists other staff at NRL Cowboys House in the guidance and supervision of students within the facility and at external events.

Our ideal candidates will have experience in a similar role and be available to work a rotating fortnightly roster including every second weekend.

Skills Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential:

Be committed to advancing the wellbeing and interests of young Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people.

Previous experience working with young people in a fair and consistent manner.

High level of interpersonal skills with strong verbal and written communication abilities.

Exceptional organisational skills with strong attention to detail.

Ability to be respectful firm fair and consistent in the delivery of discipline when required.

Sound understanding of the legal and duty of care responsibilities of boarding facilities or schools.

Sound understanding of the needs and challenges of developing adolescents.

Sound understanding on how to engage relate and work appropriately respectfully and sensitively with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people.

Sound understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and the issues facing Indigenous people and communities particularly young people.

Possess a flexible attitude and be willing to work shifts weekends and overnight stays (when required).

Current driving licence with sound driving record (LR desirable).

Current First Aid qualifications or willing to obtain.

Current Working with Children Check Blue Card (mandatory)

Desirable:

Certificate IV Community Services or equivalent
