About the role

Are you passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals families and communities We are seeking a dedicated Community Engagement Practitioner to join our team and deliver culturally appropriate and responsive family relationship services. In this vital role you will provide guidance support and advocacy to clients ensuring their needs are met with sensitivity and respect for cultural protocols and community practices. Youll collaborate with a range of stakeholders facilitate access to essential services and play a key role in strengthening community connections. If you have a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and a commitment to fostering positive change we invite you to apply and help us build stronger more resilient communities.

This role is a full time (75 hours a fortnight) fixedterm contract until June 2026.


Additionally you will:

  • Assist in the assessment and intake of client needs making appropriate referrals to support services such as Centrelink health and housing agencies.

  • Provide culturally sensitive counselling mediation and education services tailored to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

  • Support clients in diverse settings including courts hospitals prisons and community groups offering pre and postengagement assistance with legal and government processes.

  • Collaborate with community elders groups and external agencies to strengthen referral networks and promote culturally respectful service delivery.

  • Maintain accurate client records manage caseloads effectively and contribute to operational planning and reporting requirements.

  • Participate actively in cultural mentoring professional development and community events aligned with reconciliation and Indigenous engagement initiatives.

About you

You are a compassionate and culturally aware professional who thrives in collaborative environments and is committed to making a difference in the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You bring strong interpersonal skills demonstrating empathy integrity and a genuine respect for diversity and inclusion in all your interactions. Your ability to build trust maintain professionalism and adapt to changing circumstances ensures you provide the highest standard of support to clients and colleagues alike. You are proactive in seeking out opportunities for continuous improvement and personal development and you take accountability for your actions and outcomes.

  • Demonstrated experience working with and advocating for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people and supporting clients from diverse backgrounds in community services or related sectors.

  • A Diploma of Counselling Mental Health Community Education or Case Management (or higher qualifications in social/behavioural sciences education or law are highly regarded).

  • Experience in clinical roles such as counselling case management or mediation.

  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations including child protection and domestic and family violence.

  • An understanding of culturally appropriate adult learning principles and the ability to deliver group education and awareness programs.

  • Strong assessment skills to identify client needs and determine appropriate referral or intervention pathways.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with effective time management and organisational abilities.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office email and webbased programs with the capacity to quickly learn new systems and applications.
