Overview: Performs responsible work in enforcing the Illinois Vehicle Code and other laws and statutes; prepares investigative reports; enforces traffic safety; maintains good working relationships with other law enforcement agencies.
Duties and Responsibilities: Performs security duties to provide for the safety and protection of life and property in state offices complexes and adjacent grounds under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Secretary of State; monitors activities of employees and the public entering and leaving buildings and grounds; assists building occupants during emergency evacuations and administers emergency response procedures/protocols; carries firearms in the course of performing security duties; makes criminal arrests and initiates other enforcement action.
Education and Experience: Requires successful completion of the IL Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board training for Patrol Officer or equivalent and two (2) years sworn law enforcement experience as a fulltime officer orthe successful completion of the Secretary of State Capitol Police Investigator Trainee program.
Past criminal or traffic convictions can affect eligibility.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Requires possession of a valid Illinois Drivers License
Requires working knowledge of communications techniques for organizing and preparing comprehensive written and oral reports
Requires working knowledge of the Illinois Vehicle Code and other appropriate regulations and laws
Requires working knowledge of the judicial system to obtain warrants and give testimony based on criminal arrests
Requires working knowledge of vehicle identification numbers certificates of titles and vehicle registrations.
Requires ability to exercise selfdefense
Requires ability to apply investigative and research skills
Requires Ability to communicate well in writing and in person
Requires ability to establish and maintain positive interactions and working relationships with personnel from other law enforcement agencies and the public
Requires ability to testify in court with legal knowledge and with good written and oral communication skills
Requires ability to maintain a physical fitness standard as prescribed by the department.
Requires applicants to be 21 years of age at the time of appointment
Requires the ability for lifting & carrying 0 90 lbs.; pushing & pulling 2550 lbs.
Requires the ability and skill to carry a firearm during work hours and the periodic qualification with appropriate firearms as defined by department policy including skill in the legal use ethics care maintenance and safety of such weapons.
Preference will be given to Illinois residents in the hiring and selection process in accordance with the Illinois Secretary of State Merit Employment Code.
