Job Summary

*This is a parttime 20 hours per week benefited position*

The dynamic and diverse department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences houses among the first SpeechLanguage Pathology graduate programs in California and values scholarly research pedagogical innovation student and community engagement and clinical practice that is equityminded culturally responsive and centers the rights of persons with disabilities. The Department enrolls about 250 students in its B.A. (in CDS) and M.S. programs houses the oncampus Kay Armstead Center for Communicative Disorders (KACCD) and multiple faculty research labs. The CDS department is one of seven departments in the Lurie College of Education committed to preparing transformative therapists while striving to be community engaged interdisciplinary culturally sustaining and holistic in its work.

The online MS in speech language pathology track SPEAKS will be offered completely online. There is not a requirement for students to travel to campus. Students will take academic courses online and complete clinical placements in schools private practices and hospitals with certified and licensed clinicians in their local area serving individuals in their community.

Reporting to the Director of Resources & Operations with work lead direction from the SPEAKS Director the SPEAKS Advisor provides strategic direction operational oversight and oversees management of all aspects of program advising including individual and group advising sessions establishing advising resources for community partners degree program planning attending programlevel meetings and teaching courses within ones areas of expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for program planning student support and success issues. Interface with students faculty and staff and other units on campus to resolve complex student issues and recommend appropriate courses of action related to difficult academic situations. Assist college and university administrators in the investigation and resolution of advising concerns.
  • Meet regularly with the SPEAKS Director in regards to operations and develop strategic direction.
  • Ensure completeness accuracy timeliness and professionalism of all operational functions. Create a strong student support focus in the SPEAKS program using existing practices with a humanizing and transformative approach.
  • Develop student program plans; monitor student growth and progress throughout the program using existing systems and in consultation with course faculty and field supervisors.
  • Use database system for tracking enrollment scheduling advising and program planning. Establish monitor and evaluate student improvement and growth plans as appropriate; maintain confidential files.
  • Develop and lead studentfocused events such as orientations for newly admitted and continuing students as well as initiatives relevant to supporting targeted populations within the College.
  • Update and develop written and online materials that help students and faculty navigate program requirements.
  • Participate in relevant College Department and Program meetings. Present information related to student success as requested.
  • Actively participate in meetings and professional training to enhance program function and student success.
  • Maintain contacts within the department university other CSUs CCTC ASHA and other professional organizations.
  • Independently manage and implement complex projects with broad scope within and outside the departmental structures of Lurie College; use of considerable judgment and collaboration in analyzing and applying department and program policies and practice.
  • Remain competent and current through selfdirected professional reading developing professional contacts with jobalike and complementary roles at SJSU and elsewhere attend professional development courses attend regional and national conferences as needed.

  • Serve as the key contact for the SPEAKS Program policies and practice related to certification licensure and credentialing requirements program coordination and student support; engage in continuing education activities to support departmental initiatives.
  • Represent the Program/Department at meetings focused on student success certification license and credential requirements and recruitment; share summaries at relevant meetings.
  • Collaborate with other units on campus to enhance advising and communications to students.
  • Liaison between relevant campus offices including but not limited to Financial Aid Registrars Office Bursars Office GAPE etc.
  • Responsible for the oversight of adherence to ASHA certification licensure and credential requirements; including related reporting for assessment and accreditation.

  • Provide support for admissions in the daytoday operations of outreach recruitment and retention.
  • May work with the admissions committee to conduct candidate interviews and make admissions decisions; follow appropriate protocol.
  • As needed suggest updates and revisions to admissions protocol based on changing certification licensure and credential requirements and program priorities.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelors degree and/or equivalent training.
  • Six years of administrative work experience involving study analysis and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies procedures practices or programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree (M.A. or M.S.) in SpeechLanguage Pathology
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SpeechLanguage Pathology
  • California licensure in SpeechLanguage Pathology
  • Record of successful teaching and/or clinical practice in speechlanguage pathology.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to teach graduate speechlanguage pathology students.
  • Experience in academic setting.
  • Experience working with a strong pedagogical understanding of instructional strategies to support diverse learners.
  • Experience working with staff faculty students and clients/families with culturallylinguistically diverse backgrounds and creating an inclusive equitable and welcoming environment.

Compensation

Classification: Administrative Analyst/Specialist Exempt III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $3719 /month $4583/month (PartTime)
CSU Salary Range: $6970/month $13544/month
