ABOUT THE POSITION

Guidance Counselors provide a functional comprehensive program of direct services for all students utilizing the expertise gained through professional training in the areas of school counseling school social work or school psychology. These services will emphasize counseling children; consultation with teachers parents and other significant adults; and the coordination and implementation of a variety of ageappropriate activities and functions related to the academic social emotional and physical needs of the students.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires:

  • Masters degree in School Counseling Social Work or School Psychology.
  • Kentucky certification as Guidance Counselor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following are listed for reference. Success will involve the ongoing demonstration of desire and ability to perform responsibilities effectively efficiently pleasantly and with a focus on student success.

  • Counsel children individually and in small groups concerning a variety of developmental tasks and problems.
  • Provide prevention programs through classroom guidance activities.
  • Consult with teachers and parents about childrens needs concerns and academic issues.
  • Collaborate with school staff and community representatives in assessing student needs and utilizes the data to plan and evaluate the guidance program.
  • Plan and implement appropriate activities and programs to assist students in registration and transition to the next level of education or postgraduate employment.
  • Coordinate with faculty parents attendance personnel and District Court to correct the attendance problems of truant students.
  • Conduct home visits as needed to assess family circumstances and make needed referrals to community resources for problems interfering with the childs academic progress social emotional or physical development.
  • Refer students to the proper authorities for child abuse or neglect when suspicion exists and provides support services to those children as needed.
  • Assist or serve as the coordinator of testing and interpret test data to teachers and parents as needed.
  • Consult with teachers in planning and providing classroom guidance activities.
  • Assist new students with orientation and acclamation to their new school environment.
  • Select and purchase program materials and manage their budget allocation.
  • Select and attend professional development as required by the State and District.
  • Maintain monitor and transfer confidential student records.
  • Carry out other professional responsibilities including punctuality reliability care of equipment and materials planning communication confidentiality and following district and school policies.
  • Ability to use technology for a variety of purposes including but not limited to supporting instruction accessing and manipulating data professional growth and productivity communicating and collaborating with colleagues parents and the community and conducting research/solving problems. Proficiency in technology skills must be demonstrated based on the performance criteria set out in the KDE teacher standards for technology.
  • Strict adherence to the Policies and Procedures of the Boyle County Board of Education the Employee Handbook Code of Ethics for Certified School Personnel and Kentucky Revised Statutes.
  • Fulfilling contractual obligation of days worked.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Students.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Regularly required to use hands for simple grasping and fine manipulatives.
  • Regularly required to communicate effectively using speech vision and hearing.
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; and stoop kneel crouch or crawl.
  • Occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
