THE STARTING SALARY FOR THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO $50633 to $59158. Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidates education and experience related to the position as well as our agency budget and equity.


This position is with the Sheriffs Standards Division of the North Carolina Department of Justice.

Sheriffs Standards Divisionadministers all programs as staff to the North Carolina Sheriffs Education and Training Standards Commission to include the regulation of all North Carolina sheriffs in ensuring their deputy sheriffs detention officers and telecommunicators meet and maintain the minimum standards for employment training and certification.
Collect and track data in regards to Giglio and Critical Incident matters and issue reports on this data as required by NCSL. Investigate these Gigio and Critical Incident matters to determine if there is a potential rules violation; and when required prepare a written summary (PC memorandum) for presentation to the Sheriffs Probable Cause Committee. This will also require verbal and written communications with the individuals and agencies involved in these matters.

Function as the RuleMaking Coordinator for the Division. Draft and track proposed rules and amendments through the rulemaking process as directed by the Commission. Represent the Commission at monthly Rules Review Commission meetings. Coordinate with the Criminal Justice Commission in regards to rules with potential impact to both Commissions.

Represent the Commission at Administrative Hearings where this position may be expected to testify under oath in regards to justice officer certification requiring an indepth knowledge of Commission rules forms and processes.

Act as point of contact for general citizen inquiries and complaints; as well as public records requested by DOJ administration. Provide technical assistance pertaining to Commission programs.

The position will also perform other duties as needed and directed by Divisions Director and Assistant Director.

The salary grade for this position is NC14. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY or MAY NOT result.

The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of administrative technical or professional experience in criminal justice or law enforcement as it relates to the area of assignment or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS) if you are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing. If you are a former member of the NC National Guard who served for at least 6 years and was discharged under honorable conditions you must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22.
