Job Description

PROGRAMMING AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR

Maymont is a 100acre historic estate and park located in Richmond Virginia with many unique experiences for all to enjoy including the historic Maymont Mansion The Robins Nature Center arboretum formal gardens and habitats for native Virginia wildlife and farm animals. Since 1975 Maymont has been maintained and operated by the nonprofit Maymont Foundation committed to creating experiences that delight educate and inspire its guests.

The Maymont Foundation is seeking a Programming and Community Engagement Coordinator to support Maymonts various environmental historical and community engagement programs and activities. The Programming and Community Engagement Coordinator will serve in a customer support capacity engaging with and providing guidance and assistance to internal and external stakeholders. This position reports to the Director of Programming and Curator Natural Resources.

Essential Functions:

  • Participate in the planning development scheduling and implementation of educational community and outreach programming
  • Work closely with the education team in developing and implementing adult and child learning programs including plant/horticulture wildlife and history focused experiences using Maymonts prime location and resources reaching target audiences and expanding learning opportunities
  • Act as the first point of contact for inquiries from guests regarding program and activity information
  • Manage program and activity registrations within the Altru database
  • Facilitates inperson programming aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning within the Maymont Mansion and outdoors in the historical gardens and grounds.
  • Assist in the preparation and coordination of resources for all education and outreach programs and incorporates state and national standards of learning curriculum
  • Provide proper animal care to environmental education animals under the direction of the Senior Manager of Zoology
  • Prepare attendance and evaluations for weekly quarterly and annual reporting
  • Support organizationwide events and programs with an ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Research similar institutional offerings to help Maymont reach public and educational programming goals including broadening engagement with underrepresented communities through programming initiatives
  • Assist with other duties and tasks as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • Three years of experience in customer service including conflict resolution experience
  • Three years of experience in nonformal teaching or related educational setting preferred
  • Experience working with school age children and familiarity with Virginia SOLs and Virginia Early Learning and Development Standards preferred
  • Associates degree in history museum studies education biology environmental science science education or related field preferred

Competencies:

  • Ability to professionally communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Understanding of analytics and actionable reporting
  • Knowledge of or interest in history and/or environmental science and how it relates to today
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to deliver highquality engaging instruction to children and Maymont guests
  • Ability to schedule programs with a mindset for revenue generation
  • Experience or a willingness to learn handling tame domestic or exotic animals including mammals reptiles amphibians and invertebrates
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Valid drivers license required with reliable transportation to and from Maymont

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent sitting standing walking and talking for extended periods
  • Frequent climbing bending stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work inside and outside in all weather conditions
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision distance vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
