Title: Graduate Assistant (Social WorkKe Ao Mau)

Funding: UH Foundation funds


Other Conditions:

To begin approximately in June or as soon thereafter not to exceed May 15 2026 annually renewable depending on availability of funding program needs and satisfactory performance


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide support to interdisciplinary course Ke Ao Mau. Specifically this course provides students with a unique body of culturallyanchored and communitybased ike (knowledge) skills and values that facilitate work with kanaka maoli (Native Hawaiians).
  2. Work with instructor associated faculty kumu loea and students during the course semester(s) and through course preparation
  3. Provide support for all elements of the course and for community engagement elements connected to projects
  4. Provide overarching communications support as needed for associated Ke Ao Mau projects
  5. Develop reports presentations etc.
  6. Support activities associated with Huakai including engaging with community partners
  7. Liaise with Native Hawaiian Serving organizations connected to student s service hours
  8. Support efforts and developmentof Ke Ao Mau mentoring program.
  9. Lead efforts associated with development and dissemination of Ke Ao Mau projects publicity via email social media flyers website etc.
  10. Coordinate Ke Ao Mau community sessions and activities related to projects.
  11. Assist with coordination of submission project documents fiscal documents Kumu loea request payments etc.
  12. Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

1. Be a classified degreeseeking student in a Masters or PhD program in Social Work Public Health or related field under UHM Graduate Division;

2. Be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above

3. Maintain 6 credits per semester with the exception of those who have reached 800 (dissertation) or 700F (thesis)

4. Strong interest in Native Hawaiian cultural practices

5. Strong interest in interdisciplinary and communitybased research and instruction

6. Strong experience with Zoom oral writing and interpersonal skills


Desirable Qualifications

  1. Bachelors or masters degree in social work public health or related field
  2. Experience in social work or related field with an interest or background in child and family welfare
  3. Experience with Native Hawaiian populations
  4. Ability to generate project reports
  5. Competency in crosscultural community work
