The Role
UCLPartners delivers a full suite of innovation capabilities ranging from invention and product commercialisation; innovation adoption; impact evaluation; and future trend assessment. Our partnership spans the exceptional NHS providers research and higher education institutions who are our formal partners as well as the many industry partners innovators and patients who we work with to accelerate the development implementation and spread of innovationbased solutions to complex health care challenges.
This is a genuinely exciting opportunity to design and establish a new business development function within UCLPartners. Reporting to the Chief of Staff the Director of Business Development will be responsible for establishing the tools and approach for income generation in order to grow the business and accelerate progress towards achieving our strategic objectives.
Working closely with key members of the executive and senior leadership teams you will lead a programme of work to develop our gotomarket tools; design a marketdriven pricing strategy; develop business cases and pitch proposals for new projects; and embed a new business pipeline tracking process.
Housed within the Corporate Directorate but working out into the wider organisation this role will be best suited to a highly collaborative and experienced professional who can work well across a number of teams but doesnt need to manage their own team to have impact. It will require a highly proactive approach to find and pursue new growth and partnership opportunities; a willingness to roll up sleeves; and exceptional communication and relational skills to quickly establish credibility and be able to represent UCLPartners to senior stakeholders internally and externally.
This is a newly created role within our organisational structure being recruited to in the first instance as a 12month fixed term contract.
Key responsibilities
Provide professional leadership for business development within UCLPartners. This will include:
- Managing high value bid submissions proposals and/or business cases including creating compelling written content and producing accompanying budgets and implementation plans.
- Making judgements involving highly complex facts or situations which require analysis interpretation and comparison of a range of options including making recommendations for bid/no bid decisions
- Working closely with colleagues from across the organisation to find and respond to new growth opportunities
- Identifying opportunities and leading new business horizon scanning
- Working closely with colleagues and partners to generate a sustainable business development pipeline
- Building the tools and applying methods to empower teams across the organisation to meet their responsibilities for income generation
- Leading and overseeing a process of tracking and reporting new income generation to include win/loss analyses
- Leading a marketanalysis to guide strategic planning for growth
- Representing the organisation externally acting as an ambassador for the partnership at local regional and national level
- Fostering strong working relationships with internal teams our partners and stakeholders
- Providing visible leadership and role modelling in the development and maintenance of a positive culture standards and values
- Promoting collaboration teamworking and inclusivity
- Demonstrating an understanding of how we support patient and public involvement in our work
- Demonstrating a commitment to equity diversity and inclusion and an understanding of how these principles apply to this role.
You
Below we have outlined key skills and experience required for this role:
- Significant experience in a commercial or business development role within innovation the healthcare sector or management consulting
- Proven track record in identifying market opportunities and converting these into new business
- Proven track record in developing strategic crosssector partnership
- Experience in using a range of costing and pricing methodologies
- Significant and demonstrable experience in negotiating high value proposals working with clients and stakeholders from a range of different sectors (e.g. NHS providers; universities; pharmaceutical or health tech companies)
- Experience providing or presenting complex sensitive and/or contentious information in a clear succinct manner
- Experience in producing high quality written content for bids and proposals
- Ability to make judgements involving highly complex facts or situations which require the analysis interpretation and comparison of a range of options
- Ability to work flexibly and across different teams and disciplines
- Ability to collaborate with and influence a wide range of individuals and groups in professionally based organisations
- Credibility to build relationships develop networks and build alliances to achieve organisational objectives
- Ability to effectively manage a complex range of competing priorities to achieve goals
- Understanding of the role and remit of the NHS; awareness of relevant NHS policy; and understanding of the importance of both clinical and research governance in clinical service delivery.
Terms and Conditions
Job details
The Director of Business Development will report to the Chief of Staff. The role is a parttime fixedterm position covering 23 days per week for a 12month period. The remuneration for this post is competitive depending on experience with a salary range of 72100 to 103000 per annum.
We offer flexible working arrangements with an expectation of 40% onsite requirement. This combination of onsite and remote working enables us to come together when it matters most and promote a healthy worklife balance.
