About Our Opportunity
At OSD we are committed to advancing equity inclusion and reconciliation in meaningful and measurable ways. We are currently hiring three Diversity Equity and Engagement Specialists each with a unique area of focus to help drive this mission forward. These positions are part of our strategy to create culturally responsive inclusive programs and services across Nova Scotia. Each Specialist will serve as a leader within OSD helping shape and influence corporate and communityfacing initiatives through an antiracism and intersectional lens. The Specialists will play a key role in embedding inclusive practices in client services hiring program design and strategic planning.
Whether you are collaborating with communities to ensure culturally safe practices identifying and addressing barriers impacting communities or leading outreach and systemic advocacy you will be an integral part of OSDs commitment to respectful equitable service for all.
Primary Accountabilities
In this role you will:
- Act as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert advancing the departments equity and inclusion priorities including AntiBlack Racism Truth and Reconciliation and GenderBased Violence initiatives.
- Build and strengthen meaningful relationships with community members organizations and partners to ensure programs and services reflect and respond to the diverse needs of Nova Scotians.
- Provide expert knowledge on intersectionality and systemic inequities experienced by historically marginalized communities offering culturally attentive advice and developing communication tools resources and training materials
- Provide leadership in the development and implementation of policies training strategic initiatives and community engagement efforts.
- Represent the department in key conversations with partners and provide critical insight to senior leadership through analysis recommendations and reporting that support equityfocused outcomes.
- Foster safe respectful and inclusive environments by promoting awareness of available programs and providing a feedback loop between community voices and department leadership.
- Monitor and respond to emerging issues in communities through research consultation and collaboration contributing to impactful and sustainable change.
Qualifications and Experience
Ideal candidates have strong community connections and a passion for advancing equity and inclusion across systems. Along with this you have a postsecondary degree in social sciences community development or a related field plus progressive experience in equity diversity inclusion (EDI) or culturally responsive community engagement. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
You must demonstrate lived experience and/or deep understanding of the realities and systemic barriers experienced by African/ Black Nova Scotians and Racialized Persons Mikmaq and Indigenous Peoples and Survivors of genderbased violence. In addition you must:
- Demonstrate experience consulting engaging and building trust with diverse and marginalized communities
- Have the ability to apply antiracism intersectionality and inclusion frameworks to program and policy development service delivery strategic planning and evaluation.
- Have experience leading or facilitating training public engagement and consultations.
- Have the ability to navigate complex and sensitive conversations with empathy professionalism and cultural humility.
- Demonstrate skills in policy and program analysis as well as designing delivering and evaluating training programs.
- Have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
While not required it is considered an asset if you
- Are knowledgeable of ODSs programs policies and strategic frameworks.
- Have experience working within or alongside provincial or federal public service environments
- Have training or certifications related to traumainformed care antiracism or community engagement.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination standardized tests oral presentations interview(s) and reference checks.

Working Conditions
Your typical work week is 35 hours with 7hour days. This role is primarily performed in a comfortable office environment with occasional site visits. Your resilience is key as this role has exposure to psychological pressures and sensitive interactions.

Salary Range: $3418.96 $4273.75BiWeekly
