DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION
KASK & Conservatorium offers a place for free research that is embedded in a local national and international context. Researchers from different disciplines can develop their research process there in critical dialogue with the world.
The research at KASK & Conservatorium starts from or is closely related to individual or collective art and design practices. This research aims at both an internal and an external transformation. The artistic practice the artists/designers themselves and their reflection on the practice emerge differently from the process. In addition they also aim for a transformation in the wider world be it in education a particular discipline society ... These transformations can take place by the sharing of the research processes and artistic and discursive results with the world.

As a postdoctoral artistic assistant you will work on a postdoctoral research project in the arts and join one of the research clusters where you will actively contribute to a stimulating research environment together with other researchers.
The parttime assignment consists of 50% research and 30% teaching within your area of expertise. After a period of three years the progress of the research will be evaluated and if the assessment is favourable a second term of three years will commence concluding with a final report.
Five interdisciplinary research clusters form the anchor points of Research in the Arts at KASK & Conservatorium. Your research project must be related to one of them:
- Archival Sensations
- Negotiating Realities
- Disobedient Practices
- The Body Plural
- The Art of Resonance The Resonance of Art
Tasks and responsibilities
- You will carry out a postdoctoral research project in the arts.
- You will share research results during different kinds of presentations.
- You will communicate about your own artistic work and research both in text and in other forms.
- You will assist by supervising junior researchers within the research cluster or PhD applicants.
- You will actively participate in the research culture of KASK & Conservatorium and in the research cluster to which you are committed in particular. You do this by attending workshops research days meetings etc. organised by the cluster.
- You use your experience to raise research funds.
- In consultation with your department you take on teaching activities (30%) and supervise and evaluate students in the bachelors and masters programmes. You will do this in a course unit that matches your own artistic expertise.
Profile
- You are active as an artist with an extensive artistic or design practice that enjoys relevant recognition.
- You have experience with research in the arts based on your own practice.
- You reflect critically on your own artistic practice and research and position it within broader artistic scientific and social contexts.
- You are able to communicate clearly about your artistic work and research both orally and in writing to an audience of peers and to the wider arts community.
- You are familiar with the tradition of artists texts and interested in actively and creatively engaging with it.
- You have pedagogical skills that enable you to create a safe and stimulating learning environment in which students learn to create in an exploratory manner.
- You work independently and are able to plan your research maintain an overview and work in a goaloriented manner.
- You show curiosity about collaboration and interaction with other artistic researchers and are open to crossdisciplinary work.
- You promote respectful and inclusive collaboration and build positive working relationships with your colleagues.
- In the context of your teaching assignment and internationalisation you communicate fluently in English and are willing to obtain the required language certificate (B1 English) in your first academic year.
- The administrative language of the school is Dutch. You are willing to obtain the required Dutch language certificates within the legally prescribed period (A2 within two years and B2 within five years).
- You show commitment to the educational project and research mission and vision of KASK & Conservatorium in particular and to HOGENT in general.
Offer
We offer one parttime statutory appointment of 80% in a vacant position to start no earlier than 1 February 2026. The appointment is initially for a period of three years which may be extended once for a period of three years on the basis of a positive assessment.
Remuneration is in accordance with scale 510.
In addition to any financial seniority from the public sector service in the private sector may be taken into account in the financial seniority. This will be granted on the basis of employment certificates or artistic portfolio and after examination of the case.
Commuting by public transport will be reimbursed for oneway trajectories of 250 km. If you come by bicycle you will receive an allowance for this. In addition we offer you a monthly internet allowance of 20 attractive leisure activities and a staff card with additional benefits.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for this vacancy you must meet the following admission requirements at the time of application:
- You meet the general conditions of V.106 V.107 and V.148 of the Higher Education Code of 20 December 2013 regarding access to public office:
- be a citizen of a Member State of the European Union or of the European Free Trade Association;
- enjoy civil and political rights;
- behave in a manner consistent with the requirements of the position sought;
- You must hold at least a doctoral degree in the arts based on a thesis or a degree officially leveled or recognized as equivalent.
- You have an active artistic practice that you have been developing for at least 8 years.

The procedure starts with a preselection based on completeness and admission requirements. The selection committee will then select candidates (first on the basis of the artistic portfolio and then on the basis of the research proposal) who will be invited for a selection interview.
If a final decision cannot be made after the first round of selection interviews candidates may be invited for a second round of interviews.
The selection interviews are scheduled for December 2025. Candidates who are not selected will be notified after the selection procedure has been completed.
