This role will be commence at 0.8 EFT but will lead to full time in the near future requiring the right candidate to be able to grow with the department.

ROLE IMPACT
The purpose of the Nurse Unit Manager is to build lead and maintain a high performing nursing team to ensure excellence in clinical practice patient care and patient experience. Also the purpose includes overall management of the appointed clinical unit to maximise effective business and patient outcomes while ensuring that the philosophy and values of St Vincents Private Hospital Melbourne are inherent in the delivery of health care services.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Patient/Resident Centred
- Actively participate in key initiatives that contribute to improvements in person centred care.
- Take a partnership approach to care provision by embedding person centred care principles in all aspects of work.
- Ensure consumers receive information in an appropriate and accessible format.
- Actively support consumers to make informed decisions about their treatment and ongoing care.
- Ensure consumers are aware of their rights responsibilities and how to provide feedback.

Position Accountabilities
- Demonstrates a professional commitment to other health care professionals by embracing a team approach to care based on mutual respect and direct communication between health professionals and embracing and actively participating in organisational change
- Effectively deliver patient centred care within defined budgets through efficient management of KPIs
- Deliver patient centred care that coordinates individualised care from admission and throughout hospitalisation incorporating discharge planning in the plan of care Includes provision of detailed documentation of a systematic comprehensive and accurate assessment of patients.
- Evaluates the documentation of patient outcomes.
- Enhances the dignity and integrity of the patient and upholds their rights.
- Maintains confidentiality and ensures that patient and hospital information and records are not disclosed or misused in any way.
- Coordinates and implements the intervention(s) identified in the plan of care/ clinical path.
- Evaluates and records progress towards expected outcomes and revises the plan of care as necessary.
- Formulates and coordinates in conjunction with the Visiting Medical
- Practitioner (VMP) a plan of care making substantive nursing judgements based on the health status physical examination preference care and progress of each patient.
- Communicates patient response to treatment and care and documents accordingly.
- Liaise with GM/ Hospital Coordinator/Patient Flow Manager and Associate Nurse Unit Managers (ANUM) in the management of patient acuity and staffing requirements.
- Facilitates communication between the patient family medical nursing ancillary and allied health staff.
- Initiates referrals and utilises available resources for the purpose of comprehensive care to patients and families.
- Appreciates the complexity of moral decision making working cooperatively with other members of the health care team to resolve ethical and clinical issues arising in patient care.
- Effectively manage and achieve organisational change within unit context as directed by the Senior Leadership Team (SLT)
- Provide direction support and advice to nursing staff and other support personnel.
- Participates in team and hospital activities as agreed with supervisor.
- Protect the health and safety of self and others complying with all health and safety related policies procedures and directions.
- Complete required Fire and Emergency Training annually.
- Complete required Workplace Bullying and Harassment as required.
Quality and Safety
- Maintain clinical registration and any required indemnity cover (if applicable).
- Take full responsibility for all safety matters and safety performance within their work area.
- Ensure that safety is considered a core value of the work team and that safety is prioritised at a level that is equal to all other business imperatives.
- Ensure risk is managed in your work area through the use of policy procedure risk assessment and training.
- Sets and drives the expectation that all incidents are reported.
- Ensure that all incidents are investigated to root cause and that corrective and preventative actions are put in place to prevent recurrence by taking a lead role in the investigation.
- Maintain an uptodate training register for your team members and ensures that all critical training is completed ahead of schedule.
- Always work within approved scope of practice under supervision by more senior staff as appropriate
- Maintain skills and knowledge necessary to safely and skilfully undertake work
- Consult with peers and other experts and refer to other healthcare workers when appropriate and in a timely manner.
- Participate in clinical risk management patient safety and continuous quality improvement activities as part of daytoday work
- All practices are consistent with the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards EQUiP National and relevant professional practice and ethical standards and guidelines.
- Protect the health and safety of self and others complying with all health and safetyrelated policies procedures and directions
- Ensure that good safety performance (individual and team) is recognised.
- They will also ensure that rule noncompliance and poor safety attitude are addressed (this may include encouragement retraining counselling or disciplinary action)
- Work collaboratively with the safety team to drive continuous performance in work area and across the organisation
- Ensure that each employee attends an area safety meeting at a frequency of no less than once a month. This safety meeting will:
- Communicate the areas performance (leading and lagging indicators)
- Communicate organisational safety matters
- Discuss current / potential safety issues
- Discuss learnings from safety alerts incident investigations safety audits etc. and
- Explore area initiatives into improving safety performance and culture
Human Resources
- Acts as a preceptor for all staff students and trainees
- Conducts annual performance appraisals and regular goal setting for all staff
- Comply with applicable Enterprise Bargaining Agreement provisions (if applicable).
- Recruitment selection & retention of staff to clinical unit in accordance with hospital policies and procedures and organisational needs.
- Ensure that all new staff attend hospital orientation within the first 3 months of employment and receive comprehensive unit orientation within one week of commencement.
- Ensure the provision of a safe and supportive workplace for staff.
- Ensure annual performance appraisals reviews and goal planning are completed for all unit staff reporting to the NUM.
- Provide regular constructive feedback on achievement of team goals and individual development plans (both written & verbal).
- Facilitate succession planning for roles of NUM and ANUM including mentoring aspiring nurse leaders as identified.
- Ensure compliance with Human Resource policies including Equal Employment Opportunity.
- Develop rosters in conjunction with the ANUMs to meet patient and budget requirements and in accordance with team based nursing model industrial and legislative requirements.
- Manage and reduce as far as possible unscheduled staff absences.
- Where levels of sick leave exceed KPI investigation and appropriate action is instigated.
- Ensure annual leave liability does not exceed limits set out in hospital policy at any point in time for an employee in the Unit.
- Accountable for personal achievement of 100% competencies as per unit and organisational needs.
- Liaise closely with the allocated Education Consultant or Clinical Coach to implement and progress own training and development.
- Maintain all personal competencies and participate in those activities that contribute to the ongoing development of self the profession and team members.
- Promote and assist the achievement of all team members compulsory annual competencies.

QUALIFICATIONS
MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE & REQUIREMENTS
- Registered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a Registered Nurse
- Post graduate qualifications Degree/Diploma) in the relevant clinical specialty
- National Criminal History Check.
- A valid working with children check.
MINIMUM EDUCATION
REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to develop and maintain collaborative and effective relationships with all multidisciplinary team members
- Computer literacy and proficiency with MS Office suite IMC Delacy Webpas(IBA) or similar patient management applications
- At least five years experience in relevant clinical specialty
- Relevant expert clinical skills developed in acute care environment
- Ability to lead coach and support clinical teams to optimise patient and organisational outcomes
- Ability to develop and maintain a budget and to interpret performance data for reporting purposes
- Highlevel interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral)
- Welldeveloped planning and organisational skills
- Demonstrated ability to ensure the implementation clinical practice and care consistent with the mission and philosophy of the facility
- Ability to plan and coordinate patient care effectively maintain patient advocacy and utilise patient management systems
- Ability to participate in and support education activities and to contribute to the development of self and other team members
- Have a strong working knowledge and understanding of relevant regulation and legislation
