Job Description

THE ROLE: State Policy Advocate

American Student Assistance (ASA) is national nonprofit that is changing the way kids learn about careers and prepare for their futures through access to careerreadiness information and experiences.

ASA fulfills its mission through free digitalfirst direct experiences philanthropy advocacy thought leadership groundbreaking research and impact investing. We believe that exploring career possibilities as early as middle school and providing access to educationtocareer pathways aligned with ones passions and goals will result in greater confidence and longterm success for all students.

We are looking for a State Policy Advocate who will be responsible for partnering with the broad Social Impact team on internalfacing and externalfacing projects that advance ASAs organizational priorities particularly around a new statelevel strategy and workstream.

What Youll Do:

  • In collaboration with ASAs Policy & Advocacy team create and execute a strategy for state level advocacy for ASAs core issues.
  • Develop a policy platform and package tailored for the Governor in each target state based on their states findings and unique needs.
  • Develop relationships with state legislators and state agencies local/state advocates and other stakeholders such as school systems trade associations think tanks business groups parents and policymaker staff either in person or remotely.
  • Facilitate the creation leadership and execution of statelevel advocacy campaigns on priority issues.
  • Track monitor and analyze relevant state legislation.

About You:

  • 5 years of handson experience with education or labor policy government relations or nonprofit advocacy at the state level. Must have experience working with state legislative bodies.
  • Experience with policy analysis and running advocacy campaigns necessary.
  • Proven ability to research interpret and simplify both verbally and in writing complex legislative issues.
  • Strong research and analytical skills with the ability to synthesize complex information and develop actionable insights.
  • Knowledge of policies and education systems ASA seeks to influence.
