Position Overview

Resumes are being accepted for the position of Engineering Technologist II reporting to the Supervisor of Environmental Engineering. The successful candidate will contribute and learn in a challenging and productive professional engineering environment helping to support the Infrastructure Development and Environmental Engineering team manage the performance of the Citys Stormwater Management (SWM) system. Guided by the goals and objectives of the City of Guelph Corporate Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity service inclusion wellness and learning the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Community Vision for an inclusive connected prosperous city.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Oversee (including construction contract administration and/or inspection and supervision) capital projects as they relate to the improvement maintenance and operation of the Citys SWM infrastructure such as pond sediment removal or pond repair work or other capital projects as assigned. Responsibilities also include tender preparation and contractor/consultant evaluation.
  • Coordinating the operation and maintenance of the Citys SWM infrastructure including but not limited to Stormwater wet and dry ponds greenways/channels oil/grit separators and other SWM related infrastructure.
  • Oversees the SWM inspection program coordinating with Operations staff to ensure SWM infrastructure is inspected annually and management of data for reporting.
  • Training Operations staff on how to inspect SWM infrastructure including wet and dry ponds greenways/channels and oil/grit separators.
  • Coordinating the SWM sampling program including directing internal and external staff on sampling procedures and requirements. Ensuring compliance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks (MECP) Consolidated Linear Infrastructure Environmental Compliance Approval (CLI ECA) for SWM infrastructure including coordination of sampling events data management and reporting to the MOECC.
  • Identifying process improvements and innovative projects and studies related to the improvement of SWM infrastructure.
  • Collecting maintaining and reporting on information related to operation capital financial resource etc. for stormwater assets.
  • Supporting development engineering staff by conducting research and preparing site specific stormwater management criteria for development applications when required.
  • Assisting in development of the infrastructure engineering annual work program and associated capital budget forecasts.
  • Participate in technical studies research documents and plans including but not limited to watershed study updates environmental assessments retrofit studies/assessments and drainage studies.
  • Performing other duties as required.

Qualifications and requirements

  • Considerable experience related to the duties listed above normally acquired through a diploma in Civil/Environmental Engineering Technology or equivalent field of study and minimum 5 years experience in municipal engineering related to civil or water resources engineering. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must be certified or eligible for certification as an Engineering Technologist by OACETT.
  • Must possess a valid G drivers licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current drivers abstract prior to their start date to confirm their licence is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations guidelines procedures and legislation including MECP Stormwater design guidelines.
  • Ability to prepare construction contracts/tenders related to stormwater management and drainage infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of low impact development (LID) techniques as they relate to stormwater management and water resources.
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (Word Excel and Outlook).
  • Experience with municipal engineering software applications such as PCSWMM is considered an asset.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to prepare clear effective reports letters and presentations.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and excellent customer service.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.

Hours of work

35 hours per week Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.

Pay/Salary

CUPE 973 Grade 10: $39.96 $49.04
