The City and Borough of Juneau Law Department is seeking a Paralegal to join our Criminal Division staff.


If you thrive on organization multitasking and keeping complex workflows humming the City and Borough of Juneau Law Department offers an exciting next step. This fastpaced position serves as one of two indispensable partners to two municipal prosecutors moving every misdemeanor case from the first police report through final disposition.


Each day begins with reviewing new charges and opening electronic case files; throughout the day this position updates our electronic case management system tracks court deadlines and prepares routine legal documents such as motions and subpoenas under attorney direction. After an initial onsite training period qualified employees may transition to a hybrid schedule that includes remote work. This position requires coordination with police officers defense counsel and court staff ensuring that everyone has the right information at the right moment.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK IN OUR DEPARTMENT

The Law Department consists of ten professionals split between the Criminal and Civil sections lending bigpicture exposure to department operations while still preserving a closeknit atmosphere. Aside from the other Criminal section paralegal and two prosecutors this position works alongside a Civil section paralegal and reports to the Office Manager who support the City Attorney and three Civil section attorneys.


The Law Department offices are located in the Sealaska Plaza Building in the heart of downtown Juneau. The Law Department prizes innovation continuous improvement and professional growth and development. We operate an allelectronic casemanagement system and regularly evaluate new tools so as a member of our team this position is encouraged to develop new skills and contribute ideas for streamlining workflows. WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position works (Monday through Friday) 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Your office would be in the Sealaska Plaza Building located in downtown Juneau and directly across from City Hall and within walking distance of the Dimond Courthouse.

After an initial onsite training period qualified employees may transition to a hybrid schedule that includes remote work.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Continuously maintain criminal case matters in the case management system to ensure case files are up to date and accurate.

  • Process all incoming emails filings and correspondence received from the court opposing counsel and outside agencies.

  • File routine legal documents both online and in person under prosecutor direction.

  • Retrieve manage and distribute discovery and evidence. Communicate additional evidentiary needs as necessary.

  • Track upcoming pretrial hearings and jury trial dates to determine whether victim and witness contact is necessary.

  • Close and archive files according to the records retention policy.


CONFIDENTIALITY REQUIREMENT: It is an essential function of this position that discretion tact and appropriate confidentiality be maintained at all times.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent.

Experience:
Two (2) years of administrative experience in a law office or administrative experience that included work in one or more areas of Human Resources Procurement Accounting Finance Office Support or a related administrative area. This is equivalent to the Administrative Assistant with the City of Juneau or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:
College or business college training in the field of Criminal Justice Legal Studies English Communications Business Administration or equivalent may be substituted for the experience on the basis of 2.5 semester hours (3.75 quarter hours) for one month of experience. A paralegal certificate may be substituted for the required work experience.

APSIN Clearance
Please be aware this position works directly with CBJ systems that may include assistance with a departments Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). This requires the incumbent to submit to a preemployment fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position and required access to APSIN an applicant with adult criminal convictions will not move forward in the recruitment and selection process. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance. Final offer of employment is contingent on obtaining DPS security clearance.
