Description

Bellingham Technical College invites applications for the following professional exempt Licensed Veterinary Technician position. This is an exempt nonrepresented fulltime 10 month (SepJune) annually continuous position. The position reports to the Dean of Professional Technical Education with direction from the program instructors. The position will start in September 2025.

Under the direction of program faculty the Veterinary Technician provides instructional and technical support to the Veterinary Technician program. The position is responsible for assisting with the preparation and delivery of lab instruction demonstrating and performing common veterinary procedures and humane animal restraint techniques and supervising students in clinical and laboratory settings. The Veterinary Technician helps ensure student safety and learning by overseeing the performance of medical procedures providing guidance and evaluation and maintaining a clean organized and wellequipped lab environment. Responsibilities also include preparing lab materials organizing storage areas and supporting a highquality handson learning experience that meets AVMA accredited program standards.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain licensure as a veterinary technician in Washington State;
  • Know and be able to demonstrate the essential and recommended skills established by the AVMA CVTEA for accredited veterinary technology programs;
  • Assist in reviewing and evaluating the quality of technical skills and animal handling rendered by the veterinary technician student in the lab field trip and clinical setting; assist in monitoring and documenting student performance;
  • Ensure that the quality and quantity of instruction provided in the lab setting is consistent with the stated objectives of the college and industry;
  • Set up lab components tests and equipment for various courses;
  • Operate maintain modify and service laboratory equipment and supply inventories;
  • Work within College guidelines in purchasing supplies for the veterinary technician program;
  • Verify student competence in the cognitive affective and psychomotor domains as directed by State Law the AVMA and the curriculum under the direction of the program director;
  • Maintain the laboratory to standards that are OSHA AVMA and IACUC and USDA compliant;
  • In a teaching and coaching environment demonstrate with proficiency microscope and lab skills to include: microbiology hematology cytology and clinical chemistry evaluations;
  • Perform routine and nonroutine technical procedures on animals in class and at clinical sites;
  • Develop and revise laboratory exercises skills and assessments as needed;
  • Assist in representing the program to prospective students faculty clinical affiliates and potential sponsoring agencies as needed;
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings of the Veterinary Technology Advisory Committee;
  • Consult with other program faculty and staff on issues relevant to student success and retention;
  • Use basic computer skills in word processing spreadsheets and internet to prepare various reports track data conduct research etc.;
  • May supervise or coordinate the work of other temporary employees;
  • Knowledge of AVMA OSHA and USDA compliance standards;
  • Perform other duties as assigned;
  • Serve as a liaison between the program and the veterinary community and provide assistance with clinical scheduling to ensure that all students have the opportunity to gain skill sets required for completion of the program.
This will require driving to clinical sites to orient clinical supervisors and evaluate students under the direction of the program director.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Washington State Licensed Veterinary Technician or active veterinary technician license in good standing from another state.
  • Graduate of an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technician Program.
  • Three years of veterinary clinical experience working as a Veterinary Assistant and/or Licensed Veterinary Technician.
  • Demonstrated ability to support the success of individuals with varied academic abilities and backgrounds.

Preferred:

  • Five or more years of veterinary clinical experience working as a Veterinary Assistant and/or Licensed Veterinary Technician.
  • Experience teaching veterinary skills in an academic setting and/or clinical setting.
  • Experience using a learning management system.
  • Experience training others to use veterinary office software.
  • Experience with laboratory management or equivalent managerial/supervisory experience in a working environment.

Physical Working Environment:
Requires ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time; walking stooping bending twisting and lifting moderate to heavy weight unassisted; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment; working at a computer; wear surgical attire and lead aprons; must be able to distinguish colors have good manual dexterity and have good visual acuity and depth perception in order to perform tasks requiring precision and dexterity. Must be able to perform drug calculations accurately.

Supplemental Information

Compensation and Work Schedule:
The salary is $5367 per month.In months when there are breaks pay will be reduced. Position also receives sick personal and vacation leave accruals paid state holidaysWashington State insurance and retirement benefits package and some tuition waiver benefits.

Work schedule will vary but is generally Monday through Friday during the 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. workday about 40 hours per week; however schedule may vary including working more than 40 hours as needed as well as some weekends and evening work. This is a 10 month assignment with scheduled leave without pay periods generally during December/January March/April July/August/September each year.
