Days/Afternoons (United States of America)The Surgical Tech First Assist assists the surgeon during surgical procedures at the direction of the surgeon. The S.A. First Asst. functions as a member of the surgical team in room preparation turnover and facilitation of the daily surgery schedule. As a member of the Patient Care Team the Surgical Tech First Assist is trained to perform a wide range of essential patient services including designated medications/intravenous administration scrubbing and first assisting. The Surgical Tech First Assist performs a variety of basic agespecific duties to assist in the care of the patients under the direction of an RN who as determined appropriate task for delegation. The Surgical Tech First Assist makes observations as directed by the RN and reports deviations to the RN.
Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy and physiology relating to surgical procedures. Displays ability to relate knowledge to assist the surgeon. Anticipates patients needs and responds in timely manner to patient and other caregiver requests. Observes patients responses and reports and adverse reactions or other pertinent information to RN and Physician. Performs wound care as directed by RN.
Responsible for maintaining a visible working surgical field. Responsible for case preparation.
Positions patient on the operating room table maintaining proper body alignment. Performs the preoperative skin preparation and shave as ordered. Inserts foley catheters as ordered.
Assists in providing patients with a safe and supportive environment by demonstrating an understanding of: patients rights confidentiality abuse and appropriate interventions and advance directives.
Demonstrates and promotes teamwork. Enhances professional development/stays current/completes necessary competency requirements. Promotes cost containment efforts.
Anticipates surgeon and assistance needs handling appropriate instruments sutures sponges and other sterile equipment. Counts all sponges needles sharps and instruments with circulating RN to ensure no loss of items. Maintains First Assistant competency.
May clamp or tie bleeders. May utilize cautery as directed by fascia subcutaneous tissue and surgical wound.
Required Minimum Education:High School Diploma or GED
Specialty/Major:Upon hire must successfully completed scrub and first assistant didactic and clinical courses within first year or Graduate of a surgical assistant program or equivalent experience with special training to function in the SA role. CST required.
