Job Description

The State of Montana has a decentralized human resources (HR) system. Each agency is responsible for its own recruitment and selection. Montana Job Service Offices also offer services including assistance with submitting an online application.

Drafts bills resolutions and amendments. Performs legal research and provides legal advice for legislators and committees. Codifies enacted legislation writes court case summaries and prepares annotations. Reviews proposed ballot measures for conformity with bill drafting requirements. Provides legal support for interim committees. This is a non partisan position.

This position is eligible for telework on a hybrid basis the employee must reside in Montana and be able to come into the office on a routine basis.Attorneys must be physically present on a fulltime basis during a legislative session unless there are special circumstances.

Substantial knowledge of legal terminology.

Basic knowledge ofMontanahistory geography economics and demographics.

Ability to analyze statutes codes court decisions and research materials.

Ability to prepare and present legal opinions and draft legal and legislative documents.

Ability to write and speak clearly concisely and in a wellorganized manner.

Ability to quickly and accurately analyze complicated information.

Ability to be highly productive and meet deadlines under stressful conditions.

Ability to act professionally objectively and impartially in dealing with legislators and public.

Ability to communicate and perform effectively and diplomatically with personal contacts.

Ability to work independently and handle a variety of projects at the same time.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle politically sensitive work.

Ability to use computers and adapt to changing technology.

Minimum Qualifications:

Law degree

License to practice law inMontana

Writing sample required:Please attach or email to a brief and concise legal opinion or legal brief (10 pages or less) that you have drafted for a 3rdparty.
