Job Description

Schedule: One shift per week approximately 40 hours per month (max 1150 hours per year)

This position is NOT benefits eligible.


SUMMARY

Under general supervision to perform a variety of duties involved in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; to conduct and participate in general investigations of crimes accidents and cases; to control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations; to serve as an auxiliary Patrol Officer assist Detectives and perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Patrol designated areas of the City to Preserve law and order; discover and prevent the commission of crimes; check property for physical security.
  • Respond to calls for service to include but not limited to domestic violence civil complaints vehicle accidents suspicious persons robberies or other criminal and civil matters where a member of the public is requesting police assistance.
  • Investigate crimes collect evidence of varying types interview suspects victims and witnesses apprehend and arrest offenders and present evidence in court.
  • Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigations of crimes and apprehension of offenders.
  • Take custody of found property.
  • Prepare reports on activities performed arrests made and incidents observed.
  • Book prisoners in jail transport prisoners assist in the custody care and welfare of prisoners.
  • Contact citizens regarding law enforcement issues crime prevention issues and engage with the public in various outreach efforts.
  • Participate in required training courses and programs.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • These duties may be done in conjunction with a partner officer as part of a twoman car or solo car at the discretion of the Chief of Police or their designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 21 years of age on date offer of employment is extended.

Education: High school diploma or GED

Experience: At least two years of college is desirable. Previous law enforcement experience as a patrol officer is preferred.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Utah Drivers License
  • Possession of POST Basic Law Enforcement Certification or possession of Special Function Officer (SFO) Certification.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Functions and objectives of Federal State and other local law enforcement agencies.
  • Basic principles of criminal law.
  • Principles and practices of effective community policing.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.

Skill with:

  • Learning to operate firearms and other modern police equipment.
  • Operate modern office equipment including computers computer equipment and software.
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle.

Ability to:

  • Learn modern police methods related to patrol suspect apprehension arrest search and seizure traffic control and investigative techniques.
  • Learn modern investigative methods.
  • Learn local geography streets public buildings and businesses.
  • Learn about recent court decisions and how they affect police department operations.
  • Learn selfdefense tactics.
  • Learn properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with Federal State and local law policies and regulations as it pertains to enforcement of law arrest and apprehension search and seizure evidence records maintenance and traffic control.
  • Learn to gather analyze evaluate and use facts and evidence.
  • Learn interpret and explain city and department policies and procedures.
  • Observe accurately and remember names faces numbers incidents and places.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Interact with the public effectively and with tact.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary as outlined in General Directive No. 007 Physical Fitness Standard Guidelines.
  • Exercise good judgment flexibility creativity and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
  • Communicate clearly effectively and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Establish maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted and interacted with in the course of work.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to sit stand walk run kneel crouch stoop squat crawl twist and climb; exposure to heat cold noise outdoors vibration confining workspace chemicals explosive materials mechanical hazards and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for shiftwork.

Due to the nature of this position the incumbent places their life and personal safety at risk.
