TheHonolulu Police Department (HPD) is looking for anInformation Specialist IIto independently carry out a variety of public relations and informational activities for the department to disseminate to the general public. The Information Specialist II under the direct supervision of the Media Liaison is responsible for researching and handling inquiries from the news media writing news releases assisting with news conferences and public relations strategies for controversial issues and incidents developing and publishing content across various social media platforms and other duties as required.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Gathering information determining what is appropriate for release and writing news releases.
  • Evaluating and responding to a variety of inquiries from the news media and public.
  • Assisting in developing and publishing engaging content across various social media platforms by gathering information capturing or curating digital media and creating captions for photos videos and graphics.
  • Assisting in preparing for news conferences by gathering information drafting statements arranging for news media attendance and preparing the speaker to answer questions from the news media.
  • Assisting in creating departmental brochures posters and ads for printing and dissemination to the public. This may also include writing and/or editing copy designing layout arranging for photographs and other necessary tasks to complete the project.
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At the time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a noncitizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from a regionallyaccredited four year college or university with a bachelors degree in journalism communications or a related field.


The education requirement must be met at the time of application. Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionallyaccredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program evidence of comparability or an original transcript.

Verification Requirement: In order to be given credit for your education clearly list your education credentials on your application. As part of the hiring process you may be asked to furnish documentation to verify your education to satisfy this education qualification requirement. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Three (3) years of professional experience in researching analyzing organizing and preparing written information for dissemination to the print and broadcast news media.

Applicable Skills:
  • Knowledge of publicity methods and media.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques used in writing informational material.
  • Knowledge of techniques used in preparing and editing copy for printing.
  • Ability to write and speak effectively.
  • Ability to secure evaluate and present facts accurately and concisely.
  • Ability to work well with people.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the various segments of the public.
  • Ability to plan and administer informational programs.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Possession of an appropriate valid drivers license as required.
