Job Description

Department Overview

The NeuroOncology Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) delivers care to NeuroOncology outpatients. The ideal candidate is an APP committed to the care of patients with brain tumors and who embraces a multidisciplinary team approach. Responsibilities include management treatment and followup care of patients with brain tumors; teaching and mentoring medical APRN & PA students residents and fellows; and shared night/weekend call. The APP is also responsible for partnering with the patient family pharmacist and nurse case manager to impact timely patient flow; and family experience through communication and education; promote an interdisciplinary approach to care; and support new processes to improve patient outcomes.

This position is for an APP faculty member appointment in the School of Medicine. The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the universitys missions and goals of teaching research patient care outreach and public service. The APP is expected to comply with the scope of practice other laws regulations OHSU policy and other applicable professional standards of practice.

The APP delivers healthcare services to individuals within the scope of their license provides advanced education to students peers and others; and may contribute to new knowledge and/or technology by conducting or participating in scholarship.

Function/Duties of Position

Clinical Activities (not related to teaching or research): Assure the safe efficient high quality and customer oriented management of patient care to identified patient populations including but not limited to completing a comprehensive assessment of the patients status; developing monitoring and revising as appropriate an evidencebased treatment plan that addresses diagnoses patterns of disease risk factors and treatment alternatives; treat many common acute and chronic health problems; interpret diagnostic tests prescribe and manage medications and other therapies provide health teaching with an emphasis on prevention of illness and health maintenance; and refer patients to other healthcare professionals as necessary.


Neurooncology Specific Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the neurooncologist during clinic days by editing scribes notes coordinating necessary orders including chemotherapy and managing AVS.
  • Conducting independent clinic day dedicated to symptom management covering areas such as seizure and steroids management fatigue alleviation and overseeing midradiation and midchemotherapy checkins.
  • Managing inbasket tasks which involve addressing straightforward symptom inquiries and providing guidance on triage decisions such as recommending urgent care or ED visits or advising on the need for shortinterval MRI scans (in collaboration with the neurooncologist).
  • Providing comprehensive chemotherapy education to newly diagnosed patients ensuring the accuracy of chemotherapy plans and monitoring treatment progress while following up on outpatient laboratory results.
  • Handling paperwork duties with routine nonmedical documentation managed by PCPs while handling other patientrequested or carerelated medical paperwork. In cases of complexity scheduling a billable appointment is an option.
  • Participation in and coordination of Tumor Board activities.


Scholarship (improvement science research writing abstracts grant supported work presentations etc.): Keep abreast of changes in field and applies knowledge to identify and recommend enhancements to clinical quality patient experience/satisfaction length of stay and to achieve improvement that demonstrates a higher standard of care. Assesses and recommends initiatives to improve performance indicators related to patient experience quality and costs. Professional development meeting the expectations of ongoing certification. Demonstrates success or productivity in the field as evidenced by securing research funding publication in journals and/or other forms of peer presentations.


Teaching/ Clinical Supervision:Support OHSUs academic missions by participating in the design development and assessment of program curricula for professional (advanced practice nursing medicine and physician assistant) specialty areas; including course objectives instructional methods learning outcomes projects and assessment measures. Teach program courses as needed according to specified learning outcomes; academic advising and career related counseling for students; monitoring student retention and identifying and assisting atrisk students.


Deliver individual instruction to support fellows residents graduate APP students and other clinical learners to support their personal program of learning in the applicable specialty area. Provide instruction and review of the practices policies and procedures in a variety of functions; including but not limited to development of treatment plans interpretation of clinical diagnostic data; developing orders; patient and family communication and education; management of medical equipment electronic medical records; performing procedures and transitioning patients to the next level of care. Assures adherence to the specialty specific protocols best practices quality and organizational indicators. Provides input to the performance of the resident or graduate APP student as a provider or graduate APP student provider in the practice setting.

Required Qualifications

  • Masters Degree as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider role.
  • Current licensure as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider governing board(s).
  • Demonstrated ability to satisfy standards of performance delineated by law and associated professional practice standards the latter set forth as an addendum to the position description.
  • Ability to manage heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient in the use of computing hardware and software including personal computing equipment electronic medical record word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Regular and consistent attendance at work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Acute Care Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
  • Prefer 35 years clinical experience as an AGACNP/ ACNP/PA that demonstrates ability to fulfill responsibilities for the specific role.
  • Quality improvement experience
  • Experience in the Microsoft Office Suite of products.
  • Experience using Epic EMR
  • ACNP PA National Certification Oregon Nurse Practitioner license with prescriptive authority or Oregon Medical Board license
